My great-great grandparents were John Kennedy (~1832-1925) and Anne Hawley (1833-1873), who married in the RC parish of Cloughjordan on 17 February 1855. They emigrated to Melbourne, Australia later that year or early 1856 (I have not yet identified their immigration documents). John’s death certificate (Victoria RN 11489) listed his parents as unknown.
Anne was baptised in Cloughjordan on 9 June 1833, the daughter of Thomas Hawley and Judith Behan, who had a 61-acre farm in Ballycapple. Anne’s brother Thomas stayed in Ballycapple and inherited the farm. Her other eight siblings all emigrated to Australia, settling in the Maitland and Morpeth area of NSW.
DNA matching indicates that I am an estimated “third to distant cousin” of someone who is a descendant of Roderick Kennedy (~1824-1905), who was transported to Australia for seven years in 1843 for “assaulting a habitation”. Roderick has been described at https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database/roderick-kennedy.
Roderick’s parents were listed as John Kennedy and Margaret Sheedy who had five sons (namely Stephen, Patrick, Roderick, John and Michael) and two daughters (namely Catherine and Mary). In particular, Mary was baptised in the parish of Cloughjordan on 9 June 1833, the same day as Anne Hawley!
If “my” John was the brother of Roderick, then I would be the fourth cousin of my DNA match. So it looks like my great-great-great grandparents were most probably John Kennedy and Margaret Sheedy, living in the Cloughjordan parish in the 1820s and 1830s.
There were many John Kennedys in that area at that time. Grawn (or Garraun) Church was built in 1830. The parish register (NLI Microfilm 02481/05, pages 141 to 144 inclusive) includes a list of everyone who donated to it. There were two entries for “J Kennedy”, namely “Snr” and “Junr”, who donated £5 and £4 respectively. There were three entries for “John Kennedy”, one labelled “Bhasty” (presumably from Ballyhasty) who donated £2, one labelled “Kky” (presumably from Kylanisky) who donated £2, and one labelled “Carp” who also donated £2. I can’t locate any townland nearby whose abbreviation would be “Carp”, so I am wondering if it is short for “carpenter”. Since Roderick’s profession was listed as “House carpenter” in his convict records, it could well be the case that his father John was also a carpenter.
At about this time, there were four entries for “John Kennedy” listed in the Tithe Applotment books for the civil parish of Modreeny, namely in Cloghkeating, Knocknacree, Barnagologue and Forty Acres, and another eight listed in the civil parish of Ballygibbon, namely three in Bantis, and one each in Kylanisky, Upper Clash, Cappagh, Lisnamoe, Garanafanna and Clonalea.
Does anyone have any further information on this John Kennedy and Margaret Sheedy?
Thanks
Dave Kennedy (Newcastle, NSW, Australia)

Hi Christina,
Thanks for getting back to me. I do have two of Brian's books, namely "The Irish Kennedys" and "The Lower Ormond Kennedys", I think I should also get "The Upper Ormond Kennedys", as the locality I am interested in spans both Ormonds. I will be passing through Nenagh briefly next month as part of a visit by my wife, our son and me to Ireland, and intend to call in to the Kennedy display at the Heritage Centre there to see if they have a copy.
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,
After reading your post, I had to wait for local volunteers to reply.
Have you got all the Hawley information? Let me know and I will get some for you. There is a record for Thomas Hawley see below. Also, you mentioned a place in Australia called Donnybrook, there is a place of the same name, it’s on the road of Cloughjordan to Nenagh.
This is the map, click on the LARGER MAP and you can zoom in and out.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1896/05906/4676114.pdfGoing by the Hawley ship records Judith had died by 1851. None or hardly any death records before 1864.
In the Tithe records, if you put Kennedy……Parish of Modreeny there are 2 pages.
The bottom name on the first page Is Martin Kennedy he was the Blacksmith, he is my GGG Grandfather, he lived in Coolnamunna, his Blacksmiths business was near to Modreeny Church where all my Kennedy’s are buried. Then the next name above Edwd, (Edward) was my GG Grandfather.
Edward moved to a place called Ballyrickard North, known as Congor. I was born in Nenagh Hospital and lived in the same house before moving to England before I was one. The house is still there, used by the council, also it I houses Bats. The house in Coolnamunna is still there, my Uncle and family lived there until 1959. Edward was nick named the Rouser, after the Edward Kennedy who owned the Mill in Cloughjordan. They were from Bantis, my Kennedy’s originated in Kilmore. Not many records to find out if they were brothers or cousins.
If you ever search for Kennedy and Dawson in Australia and the USA they are Martin’s brothers. 2 Kennedy men married 2 Dawson girls.
Brian Kennedy, in Australia visited John (Dec.) and June Kennedy in Queensland, my Edward and their Patrick were brothers.

Hi Margot,
I have been working with a descendant of Ann Hawley's brother John. Between us, we have quite a bit of information already about the family of Thomas Hawley and Judith Behan. I have visited the graves of many of their children here in NSW.
Thanks for the death certificate for Thomas Hawley (Junior) which I hadn't seen before; the informant would have been his daughter Honora, baptised at Cloughjordan on 2 August 1871. Thomas Hawley (Senior) was alive in 1855 when son John emigrated to NSW, but had died by 1864 when son Patrick emigrated to NSW.
I had noticed that there was a Doonybrook close to Ballycapple. Both Roderick and John Kennedy lived in Doonybrook (or nearby Kalkallo) in Victoria for a while in the 1860s. Some of John's children were born there, though John later moved to Rushworth after Ann died. Roderick died in Doonybrook in 1905. I wonder if the two brothers named the area; I will look into the history of the area some time...
I wasn't able to sort out all the Edward Kennedys in the region. In the Tithe Applotment books, there was one in Coolnamunna with 186 acres (I take it your GG grandfather), one in Bantis with 98 acres, and one in Bantis with 29 acres.

Hi Margot,
You have been thorough! I have the information on most of these Hawleys already, though there are some new names among them.
I had not known about the Edward who emigrated in 1864. His parents would have been Michael Hawley (~1798-1874) and Margaret McConnell (~1812-1874). Margaret was buried at Grawn cemetery. Michael shared 139 acres in Ballycapple with several others at the 1850 Griffith valuation. I suspect that Michael was a brother of "my" Thomas, and also of the Roderick Hawley who married Annie Kennedy and emigrated to Canada.
There is a baptismal record from Cashel dated 10 Feb 1798 (NLI microfilm 02501/02 p 41) of a Thomas being the son of Thomas Hawley and Ellen Barron (or perhaps Banon -- it is hard to read). I suspect these are the parents of "my" Thomas, Michael and Roderick. There was an oddity in the death certificate (NSW RN 5784/1905) for Thomas' son Michael (the one who emigrated in 1850 on the John Knox). The informant (Michael's son John) gave the name of Michael's parents as being Thomas Hawley and Ellen Banam; I can only think that John must have mixed up the names of his grandparents and his great-grandparents?
Another oddity is that when Daniel Guilfoyle and Ellen Hawley emigrated on the Garland in 1851, they left their eldest son, 4-yo John, behind in Bantis. John eventually emigrated in 1855 with his uncle John Hawley on the Golden Era in 1855. Since John Hawley would have been housed in the single men's quarters aboard ship, I don't know where 8-yo John Guilfoyle would have bunked.

I believe my great-great grandparents were John Kennedy and Anne Hawley, although I had his name as Stephen which may have been an error. Their son Stephen was born in Kalkallo (near Donnybrook), Victoria, Australia. He married Mary-Anne Quirk and they lived in Rushworth. Their children were John (Jack) - my grandfather, Matthew, Sheila, Mary, Eileen and Stephen. Jack and Beatrice (Davis) married, my father was Leo Stephen and my brother is Stephen Kennedy. My husband and I are hoping to travel to Ireland and Scotland next year and visit the birthplaces of some of our relatives, many of whom lived in County Tipperary. I'm keen to find out more about John and Anne Kennedy.

Hi Ann-maree,
Names must travel through families! I have a sister called Ann Maree, and a son called Steven.
If you contact me directly at davelk1066@gmail.com, I will pass on all of the records that I have on John Kennedy and Ann Hawley and their immediate families; it comes to quite a bundle.

Hello All
My great great grandfather was Roderick Hawley born around 1796 in Ballycapple area. He emmigrated with his wife Ann Kennedy and 6 children to Ottawa area, Carleton County, Canada around 1834? My great grandfather was John Hawley, born 1833 in Ireland, the youngest of the 6 children who emmigrated (Maria, Michael, Hanorah, Edward and Ann). Roderick and Ann had three more children in Canada (Catherine, Roderick and Thomas). My Great grandfather John married Elizathbeth Moloughney from Puckane area in 1866 in Ontario and moved to Renfrew County, Ontario and than on to Minnesota. Where I reside. I beieve your Ann Hawley and my Rodrick Hawley were first cousins. Roderick and Thomas would have been siblings and it possible that your John Kennedy and my great great grandmotherr Ann Kennedy most likely are related too. I had my brother take the Y DNA test and my Hawley DNA belongs to Hally Group sho mostly reside in the southern part of Tipperary. Would love to hear back . Thanks

Hi Annie,
Good to hear from you.
I had read somewhere that Thomas Hawley had a brother Roderick who married Annie Kennedy and emigrated to Canada. However, I have not yet had time to research this branch, and had the names of only three of their nine children. So you have already extended my tree for me.
It is entirely possible that my John Kennedy and your Ann Kennedy were related somehow -- there were plenty of Kennedys in the Cloughjordan area. However, I am not aware of the documents to establish any link.
I am not sure that DNA would help either. We would be looking at around 5th cousins, and shared DNA is patchy that far back. Still worth a try. I had my DNA tested by Ancestry, so am listed on Ancestry, on MyHeritage, and on GEDmatch (though I find the latter had to understand and seldom go there). Is there any common ground there?
I don't understand what the "Hally Group" means by the way...

Hi all,
you say....................
I don't understand what the "Hally Group" means by the way...
A Michael Hally seems to have changed his name to Hawley in Canada. I saw this on a ship list.
I am not in Ancestry now, I remembered seeing it.GEDmatch.......... I was asked by a cousin to look at a list that she had from that site.
The names in my family were correct, then I saw the townlands.
It was transfered from another site, as the townland was entered with the local knickname, I knew I had done this!
She said it showed after she did her DNA. I have never done a DNA test. (I know where I came from)
So please be careful.

Hi Everyone,
My great, great grandfather was John Kennedy (buried in Colinabbin) and he married Anne Hawley (buried in Tallarook). From the records I have, they had 12 children and my great grandfather was Thomas Kennedy and he married Honaro Hussey (both buried in Runnymede). I am looking for any information on my great, great, great grandfather and grandmother from Ireland.
Thank you,
Helen Kennedy
