  • Thank you. here is some more info to pass on to your researcher.

I hired a researcher who found:

The Cloyne diocesan database was searched for George. This includes Youghal

parish, whose records begin in 1803. George was not found. I did find a couple

John Lyons and Mary Denahy in this parish, who had children Michael (1824),

John (1827) and Patrick (1830), but no George.

we believe George purchased a fare from Liverpool  to New York aboard the Steam Packet “Garrick” and arrived 20/1/1848 aged 22.

George was listed on the ship’s manifest as a “Clerk”, travelling Steerage, and was one of 271 passengers on that voyage. The 1850 US Census lists a “George Lyons”, aged 24, as a “Carrier”, living in a boarding house with a dozen other men. This is almost certainly OUR George, as the census has NO other George Lyons’ in the US at that time and the age is a match. By 1853 George was in San Francisco.. George then sailed on the maiden voyage of SS Monumental City (named after the city of Baltimore), leaving 17/2/1853 coming to Australia.  We have DNA matches with a number of Americans but no paper trail.

  • Hi Christine   I am a local contact living in Youghal and I wish I could help you but there does not seem to be any line I can use to find some connection here. If you can think of something specific I can do. Let me know. Lyons would not be a common name in this locality. Regards Kay Donnelly  email kaydonnelly66@gmail.com if you want to contact me personally.

  • Hi All. I'm writing from Melbourne, Australia in relation to the Lyons' from Youghal.

All the above information was researched by myself and posted online a few years ago for anyone to share, and I also have quite a bit of extra info as well if anyone would like more details. I also have the address George resided in when he was in New York (a boarding house) for a couple of years, before he arrived in San Fran several years later. I have checked quite a few shipping logs, etc, but haven't found any record of his journey from NY to SF - whether overland or by sea. Any info would be invaluable.

He arrived in Australia aboard the "Monumental City" (named after the city of Baltimore), and disembarked in Melbourne. This was the first coal-powered voyage across the Pacific...however the ship was sunk one day into the return trip near to a place off

eastern Victoria named  Gabo Island, with the loss of approx 30 lives (including the ship's owner).

George eventually settled in Echuca, on the Murray River (which is the border between Victorai and New South Wales), and became a shipwright and paddlesteamer captain. I have a photo of the boat and records of some of his exploits as well should anyone be interested.

Any other information would be gratefully accepted.

    Cheers from Aussie!
