Seeking to learn if William McGrath, son of John/James McGrath and Marie Irvin, baptized in Boyle on 7 June 1849, is my great grandfather. William McGrath indicated in USA records that he was born in Roscommon in 1849/1850, came to USA about 1875, married Sarah Fitzgerald (born in USA) in 1876, and died in Chicago in 1904. His son James McGrath, born in Chicago in 1877, was my grandfather. I have no information on William's family in Ireland, and wish to learn more. Thank you.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The subscription site Roots Ireland has the 1849 record that you listed and there is also an 1851 William McGrah baptismal record in Roscommon Town. In addition, there are some Co. Roscommon RC parishes that do not have records back to 1849 which means if your William was baptized in one of those parishes, a baptismal record would not be available. Do you have William's 1904 death record or another souce that might show his parents names? The fact that your grandfather appears to be the oldest son and his name matches the father of William on the Boyle baptismal record does add some credence that you have the right record but no guarantee.

I just went on Ancestry.com and there is a family tree which has William McGrath and it shows that his father was Edward and mother Ellen. The tree owner is shown as J. J. Kean. Is that your tree or a relative's tree?

...thanks, Roger. I'm trying to obtain William's death cert to see if it shows his parents' names as I have no other sources. That is my tree; the info for Edward/Ellen was given me by a relative but I don't believe it to be accurate, hence my new search.
