We are looking for any information about the family (siblings, parents etc) of Peter Costello born 1850 Mullaghmore to Peter and Annie.

Peter was an Alderman of Sligo. He was a general merchant and pawnbroker in O'Connell Street. His wife Catherine continued the business after Peter's death.

Peter's parents were Peter b about 1802 and Annie b about 1807. Peter was a farmer. We have no more information other than they lived in Mullaghmore.

In 1841 Peter and his parents Peter and Ann were living in Mullaghmore. There was a Dolly Costello aged 70 living with them. We would like to know who Dolly was but can find no other records for her. She is not shown in the 1851 census so possibly died between 1841 and 1851.

Peter had a brother Patrick b 1845 who died in Broome Street, New York in 1900., brother James born 1847, brother John b 1851 who married Ann Byrne.

Peter's daughter Eleanor married Joseph Liddy. The Liddy family included Lady Helen Marie Terese Pritchard-Jones (nee Liddy), and Colonel Bryan Liddywhose son Gavin, we believe, was in the Canadian Government.

We would be grateful for any help in getting any information that could help us go back.

Many thanks

Phil and Lin

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify if the Costellos were from Mullaghmore village in Ahamlish parish on the northwest coast of Sligo or the Mullaghmore townland in Ballynakill parish which is in eastern Sligo closer to the Co. Leitrim border. The reason I ask is that the Griffiths Valuation has a Peter Costello in Mullaghmore in Ballynakill parish which is a 247 acre townland. On the subscription site Roots Ireland, there are two baptismal records in Riverstown RC parish which corresponds to the Ballynakill parish area. The only drawback is that you indicate that Anne was born in 1807 and the younger Anne was born in 1856. You also indicate having access to the 1841 and 1851 census, could you share those records?

  • Hi Roger

    Thank you for your reply.

The Costello family are from Ballynakill.

Attached are the two documents we have for 1841 & 1851.

    Thanks again for your help

It is great that you have those census search forms. I would speculate that Dolly was either Peter's mother or possibly a maiden aunt. I have not seen this before but the census forms included information on children who had died. A 4 year old Mary died in 1836, a 4 month old Michael died in 1838 and the James listed in the 1841 census, died in 1847. Bridget Costello filed a pension application in 1910 but based on the 1851 census, she would not have been entitled until 1912-1913 (age 70). I did not see Birdget in the 1911 census.

Since Peter was born in 1850, I guess it is possible that despite Anne's age, John and Anna (shown above) were younger siblings.

The other issue is that the Riverstown/Tawnagh parish records go back to 1803  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0565  but there is a 16 month gap with baptismal records 1835-1836 and there is a six year gap in marriage records around the same time.  However, when I search Roots Ireland, I don't find any of the other baptismal records for the children including Peter listed on the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Strange! Since Mullaghmore is shown as their location.

  • Hi I've reason to believe Peter's son John Joseph was my great grandfather, and have recently been researching him. I have him on the 1901 census in Sligo, and Catherine and 3 of the kids in the 1911 census

  • Just found your post of 2019. I have similar information in my family tree. My great grandmother was Bridget Costelloe ( married Flanagan who worked for the elder Peter Costelloe )who had a brother Peter born same time and same parents as you have listed. When researching I belive that although they listed residence as Mullaghmore, it was not the current day Mullaghmore further north on the water, but rather they were from the Sooey, Riverstown area.

Hope to hear back from you at some point to compare further notes.
