I'm headed to Ireland in a couple weeks (yaaaay!) and hope to visit a few family sites. One of the families is:

Thomas McGrath and Bridget Quinn married 15 Jul 1823 at Newcastle & Fourmilewater RC parish. Patrick Fennessy and Margaret McGrath were witnesses.  Thomas and Bridget had the following children, all baptised at Newcastle RC parish:

1. John McGrath - bapt 31 Dec 1823; sponsors Patrick Fennessy & Ellen Hickey
2. Edward McGrath - bapt 5 Jul 1828; sponsors Thomas Prendergast & Mary McGrath
3. Ellen McGrath - bapt 12 Mar 1830; sponsors Garreth Predergast & Biddy Prendergast
4. John McGrath - bapt 29 Feb 1832; sponsors Billy Predergast & Elena Prendergast
5. Mary McGrath - bapt 27 Mar 1834; sponsors Thomas Hickey & Joanna Cahill
6. Honora McGrath - bapt 17 Oct 1836; sponsors Edmund Cahill & Mary Cahill
7. Bridget McGrath - bapt 18 Mar 1839; sponsors James Prendergast & Honora Prendergast
8. James McGrath - bapt 12 Apr 1841; sponsors Tobias Butler & Alice Byrne (he stated he was born in Ballynamona)
9. Bridget McGrath - bapt 13 Nov 1844; sponsors John Hickey & Catherine Hickey; residence: Rathokelly

This must be Thomas on Griffith's Valuation in Rathokelly, 1852.  Is it possible to pinpoint the exact location of his residence? I tried to find the lot number on the map, but couldn't find it.

Also, is it possible to determine which church(es) this family attended? I would love to stop by and see it.

Thanks for any help!

  • The colour maps that AskAboutIreland show initially are dated from a little later, so the plot numbers often dont match the valuation details, If you switch to map version 2 using the drop-down control on the top right you can see an older black and white map. This map includes some revisions in Rathokelly including site 10 crossed out and replaced with 9, and in the top right hand corner of this plot you can see a small b - this would have been the original site 10 b where that Thomas McGrath had his house & garden - see extract attached..

The nearest catholic church was in Newcastle village, and there is still a church at the same location - see attached Google street View and map, also an extract of a map of the area.

  • Thank you so much! This is so helpful! You have no idea how excited I am! Well, maybe you do, but... it wasn't too long ago that I had no clue where in Ireland my McGraths were from. Now I know *exactly* where - and a week from now I'll standing in front of it! A genealogy dream come true. Thanks so much for your help!
