Mary Murphy, b. about 1828-1830  likely in Killursa area, was my gt. grandmother.  I am searching for the names of her parents and siblings.  I have over 200 DNA matches with descendants of ancestors from Co. Galway--most from area of Headford..  The most numerous matches are with Murphys and McHughs along with a smaller number of matches with Hannons, Currans, followed by Walsh and Martin descendants.  My strongest match is with Tom Murphy followed by his son, Tim.  My Mary Murphy emigrated to the U.S. about 1850 settling in Nashville, Tenn. She was married to Adam Hoffmann and had 4 children while in Nashville:  Dora Maria (1860-1939); my grandmother, Margaret (1863-1904); Catharine (1866-1923); and William (1870-1943).  Mary moved to St. Louis, Mo. with her family around 1872 and lived there until her death 21 Nov 1895.  I believe Mary's father may have been a Murphy and her mother a McHugh.  I am hoping someone who reads this may offer additional  information to help me learn more about my great grandmother Mary Murphy.    Margaret Faux

  • Hi Margaret,

Mary's birth/baptism doesn't come up on www.rootsireland.ie/ in Killursa R C or C of I parish but there is this one with the mother's surname and in the right time frame:

    Name:Mary Anne MurphyDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:04-Jul-1828Address:DundalkParish/District:DUNDALKGender:UnknownCountyCo. Louth
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Peter MurphyMother:Catharine MchueOccupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1:Joseph Murphy Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2:Mary Mchue

Were they R C? Was her second name Anne? Irish naming pattern: 3rd daughter named after mother's mother; from your list this is Catherine which matches

  • Hello Col,

Thank you so much for responding to my posting regarding my great grandmother, Mary Murphy.  I do not think my great grandmother was born in Louth, but rather in Co. Galway.  Unfortunately, most of the records of Killursa Parish were destroyed, so I am hoping that by some stroke of luck someone may read my posting and have family records that might offer further clues.  I have about 200 DNA matches with families either living, or who have ancestors fom Co. Galway--many in the Headford area.  The largest number of matches are with Murphy and McHugh descendants, but I also have matches with Hannons, Martins, Currans, Egan and Walsh descendants.  I am hoping someday I will be able to learn the names of my great-great grandparents.  Thank you again, Col, for sending along  the information on Mary Anne Murphy and her parents Peter Murphy  and Catharine Mchue.  I live in California, so my research is focused on sources available on the internet. I will certainly keep the information you sent in my file in the event future clues point to Co. Louth.
