NAME SEARCHES

Bernard was an Anglicisation of the Gaelic name Bryan / Brian. He may also appear on record as Barnabus / Barnaby.  Most likely he was known locally as Brian Ó Neachtain which may have been recorded as Noughton, Nokton, Naughten, and even Natten. 

Mary was an Anglicisation of the Gaelic name Maura / Máire. Hunt was an Anglicisation of the Gaelic name Ó Fiaich and may also have been recorded under Fee, Fay, Foy, Fye.

NAUGHTONS near STROKESTOWN

In an ideal world, the name Naughton and Hunt would have survived in the same civil parish after the Great Famine to give you a lead. However, as you can see from the results here, the only civil parishes where this occurs are a good bit north of Strokestown. Killummod has 4 and Kilglass has 2.

After the Great Famine, Lissonuffy had 10 Hunt households and Cloonfinlough had 5.  (No results for Bumlin or Kiltrustan) No Naughtons households apparent.  

MARRIAGE RECORD

We have a record for the marriage of Bernard Naughton & Mary Hunt on 11-Nov-1833 in Strokestown RC Parish. No addresses nor parents names recorded. The witnesses were John & Eleanor Carbery. Mary Hunt, as a Catholic, had to marry in her home parish. Bernard was hopefully a neighbour in the same townland (most likely) but could have come in from a neighbouring parish to marry into her family's land in Strokestown.

This means your certainty is the Hunt family in any of the following civil parishes attached to Strokestown village and RC parish:

Kiltrustan, Lissonuffy, Bumlin & Cloonfinlough

As far as land records (census substitutes) are concerned, the main Hunt strongholds were all just south of the village of Strokestown; primarily in the civil parish of Lissonuffy (south-east) & spreading westwards into the adjacent parish of Cloonfinlough (south to south-west).

The Naughton name does not appear on land records in the district of Strokestown after the Great Famine. So again, your chances of finding living relatives may be better if you follow the Hunt line. 

If you are absolutely certain that the 1833 marriage to Mary Hunt is your ancestor's, then the marriage witnesses point you to the townland of Cloonfree where Hunt and Carberry resided. 

I'll dig a bit further into pre-famine records for you if you can confirm this first. It looks like the Naughtons were also residing at Cloonfree, albeit without land to their name. 

Thank you for your reply Rua and alll the information that you have given me, I really do appreciate your time.We found their marriage record in the Catholic Parish Registers Microfilm 04608.Mary was the daughter of Bartholomew Hunt and Bridget Kennedy and when they emigrated her brother John Hunt  travelled with them.I’m not sure how else to prove this information.We have quite a bit of information of the family in Australia and it all points to the correct family line. Although there are no surviving church records for Bartholomew Hunt and Margaret Kennedy anywhere in Co. Roscommon, there is sufficient evidence to suggest Mary Hunt came from the civil parish of Cloonfinlough about a mile west of Strokestown village on the road to Tulsk. Interestingly, this means that you also need to keep an eye on Tulsk RC parish records as well as Strokestown. But for civil registrations after 1864, it's Strokestown. 

The good news is, the Hunts were plentiful in this district so you are sure to find relatives.  Hunts remained in the ancestral townlands well into the 20th century and married locally. 

The Hunt stronghold is the townland of Cloonfree and across the road (to the north) in Cloonsreane (aka Cloonshreen in old records).

The Kennedy stronghold was adjacent to Cloonfree in the townland of Cloonslanor to the east (with some spillover to Cloonrane to the west). 

Can you tell me if Bart Hunt & Margaret Kennedy, the parents, emigrated in January 1840 or not? Or if there way any mention of them being deceased by a certain time? In any case, the name was handed down to a son and grandson who stayed on the land. 

Also, can you tell me if John Hunt, their son, was married with children, and to whom, at the time he emigrated? What other clues do you have?

I'll take a look at the maps next to see what family homesteads may still be extant. 

Hello Rua,I’m sorry I have been so long getting this information to you,I thought I had but found out that I’m not as clever with the computer as I thought I am.To my knowledge John Hunt’s parents did not come to Australia and he was not married.John joined a religious order at St Mary’s Priory in Sydney for a time but married when he “abandoned the religious state and entered the world,according to my records..He married Anne Fitzpatrick in 1859 in Sydney and then moved to Armidale,as the records state,to be with his sister and brother in law Maria and Bernard Naughton.Their children were all born in Armidale New South Wales,Mary Ann in 1859,Margaret in 1861,John William 1863,Michael 1864,Theresa 1867,Ann Elizabeth  1869,Agnes b and died 1871, Alice b&d 1872 Bridget b&d 1872.. John was a Tailor and evidently had his own business in Armidale. I haven’t followed this line any further. On Mary’s death cert it states that her father Bartholomew was a farmer and her mother Bridget Kennedy.John died2/5/1881 and is buried in the Roman Catholic of the Armidale Cemetery N.S.W. Mary’s death cert. states that she was born in Roscommon doesn’t say town or county. I’m afraid that is about all the info that I have Rua,probably not much to go on but I hope it helps a little.We will probably be in the Roscommon/Strokestown area around the 1st or 2nd of October,not a 100% sure yet.   Any information that you are able to find will be really appreciated.  Kind Regards.   Faye Wellings

Hello, I just stumbled across this today while searching another topic. I knew some of the Hunt family living in Cloonshreen and know their descendants who reside in Tulsk parish now. Perhaps you have visited the area since you last posted. The Kennedy family who live in the area did not originate there. I know them also. Just curious. Thanks.
