Hello,

We are planning to visit next month and I am trying to research my husbands family. His emmigrant ancestor was James Connell, Roman Catholic and supposedly born in 1816. His death certificate and gravestone only say, native of Co. Cork, but family stories claim they were from Charleville and his father was Michael. However, based on naming patterns the family continued to use for generations, I think his father could have been John.

I have a subscription to Ancestry and rootsireland, but struggle to find any records for James baptism, in part because I am unclear about Charleville. Was/is it Charleville located in Cork or Limirick County? Was/is it part of the Cloyne Diocese? I have found some records that could be a match, however they say Ballihea or Shandrum, which appear to be nearby?

Any insight into geography or diocese would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

  • Thanks for mentioning the sources you've used

The R C registers at the National Library site (free at registers@nli.ie/) has a map showing Charleville parish half in Cork & half in Limerick & is in Cloyne Diocese Shandrum & Ballyhea are right next to it so either could be your Connells

www.irishgenealogy.ie/ is good for Cork records & has a few possibles - not sure of location but might fit naming pattern; all are from Cork & Ross Parish South
