Hi,

Pierce FOGARTY of Killeen townland was baptised 2 Feb 1853 in Kilmanagh Parish. His parents were Philip FOGARTY and Catherine MARNELL who were married at Pollagh/Pollough, an adjoining townland on 11 Jun 1846. Pierce migrated to Queensland, Australia in 1874 after the death of his father Philip.

I have found the baptisms of his siblings:

Mary - 8 Feb 1847

Nicholas - 17 Oct 1849

Ellen - 17 Jul 1851

Honora - Mar 1856-1856

Honoria - 8 Oct 1857

John - 7 Sep 1859

Catherine - 13 Oct 1861

It is alo possible that a Philip FOGARTY who was baptised in 1841 was also a son (?illegitimate) to this (or another) Philip FOGARTY and Mary SWIFT. The parish register image is not available to view online but the transcription mentions that there is a comment on the record which I suspect refers to illegitimacy. I do know know what happened to him.

I have further marriage/death information for nearly all of these except John - I do not know what became of him. Apparently, he was no longer at Killeen when his eldest brother Nicholas died in 1895 as Honoria inherited the farm which she retained until her death in 1937 after which the farm went to a MARNELL. The MARNELLs are still at Pollagh.

Philip FOGARTY was baptised 24 Jun 1809 at Rathmacan townland, which was in the Parish of Freshford at this time but later in 1843 became the Parish of Tullaroan. His parents were Nicholas FOGARTY and Mary DORAN. I have not found their marriage.

I have found the baptisms of the following siblings but there may be more:

Helen - 6 Mar 1797 St Canice's - no further information

Ally - 28 Oct 1801 married Edmond BOWE in 1832 at Rathmacan

Darby - 10 Feb 1803 Rathmacan married to ?

Then Philip in 1809. As there is a 6 year gap here there may be others I have not found.

The townland of Rathmacan also adjoins Killeen but is in a different parish, Tullaroan.

There is a cluster of FOGARTY families/tenants in Rathmacan at the time of the Griffith's Valuation in 1849 but they are gone by the time of the revision and final publication in 1850. There are two FOGARTY familes in Killeen.

There is also some connection with one or more Simon FOGARTYs, one of whom was Rev. Simon FOGARTY who was a parish priest. There is a Simon FOGARTY in Killeen in the Tithe Applotments.

I am interested in discovering / figuring out how the FOGARTY families in Killeen and Rathmacan are related to each other.

I would also like to know where they are likely to be buried so that I can visit the graveyards.

I am visiting Kilkenny next week commencing 22 July in the hope of gaining some more relevant local information and would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help me or who is also connected to or researching these families or locations.

Thanks

Dale Fogarty
