My ancestors lived on or near the Bellurgan Park Estate according to records found in the United States. The surnames I have an interest in are: Carr, O'Hanlon, Trainor, and O'Hare. Most of them left County Louth for New York in 1842 but a few family members did not arrive in Elmira, Chemung, New York until around 1855. I do not know if they left family members in Ireland. I would think so but the records are not clear. I have found only one marriage record in Ireland for a several great-aunt. Ann Carr married Thomas Murphy in Lordship, Louth, Ireland 31 Jan 1844. She was the daughter of Thomas Carr and Elizabeth Trainor.

  • Hi Kat, welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. The names you mention are all found in the area of the Cooley Peninsula, the lesser know one is Carr, and Trainor has many variants including Treanor and Traynor etc

I see the marriage you refer too but could not locate the birth of an Anne Carr to suit, Roots Ireland shows an Anne Car born in 1828 (16 at marraige) but while the mother is a Treanor the first names of both parents are incorrect, however there is a Bridget Carr born to those parents in 1833 in Lordship, I have pasted the information below.

There was migration in the period 1820 to 1830 from the Cooley peninsula to New Brunswick, Canada and also from your area to Ovid, New York, there is a gentleman I am in contact with who is willing to check the gaveyard there for Cooley people.

There was  also a query or two about O'Hanlon in the area, the name is from ancient chifetains of the area. I digress.

There are a few places you can look for information in a general sense, Also see 6 baptisms for a Thomas Murphy in Louth from 1815 to 1828, did not look at them as without parents names it is impossible to pick the correct one and Murphy is a common name here.

The former US Vice President Joe Biden has famlly from that area (Finegan) and you can see his tree online free if you Google it.

Catholic parish registers are here but you cannot search except by year and month and it can be a tricky read but you may find something missed in transcription. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0191 I see that the baptisms only start in 1838 but I found earlier ones on Roots Ireland but it is possible the do not go far enough back for Anne Carr in Lordship. Also Louth in in the diocese of Armagh also a county in case you are wondering why it says Armagh.

Name:  Bridget Carr        Date of Birth:

     Date of Baptism:21-Aug-1833

    Address:              Proleek Parish/District:  LORDSHIP

    Gender:               Unknown            County Co. Louth

    Denomination:  Roman Catholic

Father: Thos Carr             Mother:               Betty Trainer

    Informant 1:       Jas Fegan

    Informant 2:       Cath Fegan

There is a site about Louth here and if you see a death entry that interests you let me know as I have a few grave inscriptions or can get them in the reference library http://jbhall.clahs.ie/

Interesting photos here for the Cooley area, https://www.carlingfordpeople.ie/ There is a County Louth Genealogy Facebook page and also a Dundalk North End and Cooley Photos Old and New, the latter not very active.

There are 38 Carr marriages in Louth between 1840 and 1860, none with fathers name Thomas but this detail was often omitted so not much assistance. If you have any specific queries on the names we can have a furhter look.
