My 5th great grandfather, Nicholas McKenna was born in Truagh, in 1726.  He married Rose MacMahon in 1749, and they lived in Mullagh, Cavan.  He died July 22, 1795, in Mullagh.  I'd like to know more about his origins.  Thanks!

  • Hi. I understand that Nicholas (who was TP's grandfather) had other siblings with him in Mullagh and they married and lived in the local communities. Is it certain that they came to Mullagh from Truagh?

  • Thanks for getting in touch.  The information regarding Nicholas McKenna came from Stephen McKenna, a descendant of T. P.'s, on the Ancestry website. The information did not originate with me, so I'm not certain that they came to Mullagh from Truagh.  Can you shed any light on the subject?

  • Hi.  I wish I could add to what's known.  I'm not on the Ancestry site but you'll see that Stephen has recorded on the Myheritage site that Nicholas had a sister who also married locally in the Mullagh area.  Perhaps Stephen has some definite information which confirms that they came to Mullagh from Truagh.

Thanks.  This is what I've learned from Stephen McKenna:  Family lore has it that Nicholas McKenna came from Truagh.  There are press reports relating to later McKennas that confirm that information.  Truagh is the principal seat of Clan McKenna.  Family members have been unable to make connections with any McKennas who are related.  Nicholas more or less established his own branch of McKennas in Mullagh.  As you can see, the information is not definitive, and anyone who can add some insight would be mos welcome.
