I am searching for any information on my 2xgreat grandparents - Patrick BYRNE and Ellen KELLY and Patrick's first wife, Bridget MULLENS.  The spelling of the surname Byrne sometime comes up as 'Byrnes'.

Patrick and Ellen and the first born five of their children were immigrants to Queensland, Australia on the 'Persia', arriving in December,1861.  My difficulty has been to trace their details before migration.  Their possible dates of birth are contradicted by information on immigration records and various  certificates, as are those for the children they brought with them.  If anyone can shed any light on this family, it would be marvellous as I am travelling to Ireland in September/October and hope to visit churches, places etc connected with the family. A bonus of course would be the possibility of meeting any of my 'cousins'.  Details to hand are:

Patrick BYRNE - f. Patrick Byrne, m. Mary Murphy.   Birth - Wexford.  His Death Certificate 1889 states age as 75 - therefore born c.1814.  (Immigration records 1861 state age as 33 therefore - born c.1828!). A son (my great grandfather) Patrick was born in 1863 In ipswich, Queensland and his birth certificate shows Patrick Snr as 50 - so this brings us back to the earlier date being the most likely.  His first marriage was to Bridget Mullens, probably in the early 1830s. They had several children. A surviving child, Ann, remained in Ireland and is noted as being 58 on his death certificate. Family lore relates that Bridget died in the 1840s. Patrick's second marriage was to Ellen Kelly in Ballindaggan c.1849.  Their eldest son, John Rowland Byrne was born c.1849 in New Ross.

Ellen KELLY - f. Michael Kelly, m. unknown.  As her marriage to Patrick was in Ballindaggan - this is possibly her place of birth.  Date of birth variations are - stated as 30 years old on 1861 Immigration papers - therefore c.1831/stated as 35 on Patrick Jnr's birth cert in 1863 - therefore c.1828/stated as 103 on her death cert in November, 1919 - therefore c.1816!  On the death cert her youngest daughter (who was the Informant) was 52 so Ellen would have given birth to her at 51 years of age.  The 1828-1831 d.o.b. is more realistic.

A John Rowland Byrne, parents Patrick Byrne and Ellen Kelly, was baptised in New Ross in 1849 and a baptism for their daughter, Margaret is recorded on 5 February, 1860 - in Old Ross.  Margaret died in 1861 en route to Australia.

This is my conundrum -- can anyone HELP????

My best wishes - Beverley Fox, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

  • Dear Miriam --- lovely to hear from you again - and thank you for your time and research skills!  My information on John Rowland comes from his maternal granddaughter - Meryl Hutchinson. I have spoken with Meryl who lives in Toowoomba.  She bases her findings on family stories and his age (78) at date of brth - 27/08/1927.  You are absolutely correct in your statement regarding lack of faith in documentation without reliable source records. (Meryl also uses two spelling variations of his middle name in her story.)  She states that he was born in 'Co. Ross', Wexford and my mother's cousin (who is still alive) told me he was born in 'New Ross'.   Knowing it is unproven but using this information until it is discounted is really all that one can do when endeavouring to research origins.

I have had contact with Soozie and will follow up her comments again and get back to you on her information.  I believe that she has based their ages as those given on Immigration records.  As Patrick and Ellen were Bounty Immigrants and age was a criterion of acceptance to the scheme - it is more than likely that Patrick, at least, stated his age on these documents to suit his needs.  The brick walls that I have continued to hit in researching this pair remain strong, Miriam!!  I will be in touch.

  • Dear Miriam -- yes I have had my DNA done and very happily a family from Dublin has made contact with me in relation to our shared descendancy from Catherine (Kitty) Duggan who married William Corcoran on 11 October, 1855 in Tipperary.

Now - Catherine and William had three children - Michael, Margaret and Ellen.  Margaret - known as Maggie in our family - migrated to Australia aged 16 in 1875 to join an Aunt.  In 1883 she married Patrick Byrne (Jnr) - he had been born in Ipswich after Patrick and Ellen's arrival in Australia.   Patrick Jnr and Maggie are my great grandparents.  This DNA connection is through Catherine alone.  I have not yet located any DNA matches to the Byrne/Kelly combination.

I checked my response from Soozie and she has relied on Immigration records to determine approx dates of birth for Patrick and Ellen Byrne and family.  She also made comment that the tree she manages is her husband's and the Byrne family connection is a tenuous one.  I am yet to make contact with a Matthew McCoy as he has a specific d.o.b. for John Roland in his tree.  As no source from Ireland is appended, I suspect this may be his family's 'passed down knowledge' only.  I will follow him up.

    Thank you again, Miriam -

    Best wishes - Beverley
