I have recently added my husband's 2xGG (William George Chapman b. abt. 1832 d.1893) to the ancestors listed under County Wicklow. (it is not showing at the time of writing this as it is still subject to moderation but, hopefully, it will appear soon). I am trying to find out more about William George Chapman's Ancestry. In particular, when his Father was born and who his Father's parents are.
William's Mother was Sarah Edge. I have managed to find out quite a bit about the Edge family. However, the Chapman family of County Wicklow is proving illusive.
I believe William's father was probably b. abt. 1800 in Ireland and also called William. On William Jnr's death registration, William Snr is listed as George but on both of William Jnr's marriage registrations he is listed as William. The marriage registrations are likely to be more accurate so his father is most likely William (and may be William George like his son).
I do know that William Snr died in 1866 in Newtown Mount Kennedy in County Wicklow. William Snr's probate shows he had a daughter Elizabeth who had married a member of the Edge family. I have found out a little about her and her husband. What I can't figure out is exactly when William Chapman Snr was born and who his parents are. He may or may not have been born in County Wicklow but he did marry there, leased land there during his adult life, and died there.
Anyone else researching this family? Anyone else know anything about Chapman's in County Wicklow in general and / or Newtown Mount Kennedy in particular?
Thanks
Jane C

William jnr. was baptised on the 15th April 1833, and baptised the 5th May in Newcastle Church of ireland parish Co. Wicklow (from transcript on RootsIreland pay-website). Parents are shown as William and Sarah. No residence or father's occupation is noted. There are also baptism records of at least probable siblings - Elizabeth 1829, Anne 1839 and George 1840. George baptism transcript.included a family residence of 'Newtownmountkennedy'.
There's no sign that I see of a marriage for William snt. and Sarah in the records online, and no further clues as to where this William came from..
A probable match from your William is shown occupying a property consisting of a House, Offices, Yard (shed, workshops, stables etc) & small garden in Newtown Mountkennedy town on Grifith's Valuation in 1854, he leased the proprety from a Robt. G. Cunninghame. There's also some possible matches for the same William leasing land in the area.
Edit : found entry for William and Sarah on the index to marriage licence bonds with shows the names, year 1826 and location as Dublin Diocese.... unfortunately just Diocese and no parish name so could have taken place in County Dublin or city, in Wicklow or parts of Kildare, for these records only the indexes survive...

Just looking more closely at what you wrote. I am assuming that when you said: "William jnr. was baptised on the 15th April 1833, and baptised the 5th May in Newcastle Church of ireland parish Co. Wicklow ..." you meant: to say: "William jnr. was born on the 15th April 1833, and baptised the 5th May in Newcastle Church of ireland parish Co. Wicklow ..." - ??
Thanks again

sorry about that - typed baptised twice in error, I rechecked to be certain - born 5th April 1833, baptised 5th May 1833.

Hi Janec, I am also searching for George Chapman Newtown Mount, Wicklow. Circa late 1700s to early1800s, father of Elizabeth Chapman who came to Western Australia and married in western Australia in 1840. Elizabeth's mother was Elizabeth Hall. Have you come across them at all?

Hi Corinna
No, I haven't come across George Chapman, Elizabeth Hall and their daughter, Elizabeth. However, I would be very surprised if they aren't related to my husband's William Chapman and his son William George Chapman (1833-1893). The names William, George and Elizabeth are common in the family. William George had a sister called Elizabeth. She remained in Ireland and married a cousin (relative of her mother, Sarah Edge).
William George Chapman appears to have travelled to Melbourne sometime between 1952-1855. He married in Melbourne in 1855. So William George is likely the same generation as your Elizabeth. I have found it quite difficult finding information about William George Chapman's extended family but I will do a bit more digging.
Have any of the descendents of Elizabeth DNA tested on Ancestry or similar? William George Chapman is my husband's 2nd great grandfather. My husband tested at Ancestry and I have uploaded his data to all the usual places.

Hi Jane
Sorry I have taken so long to reply, I didn't get a notification that you had responded to me.
I have recently had my DNA test done by ancestry and have posted on other sites.
There are lots of distant matches.
How would I know if one is your husband?

Hi Corinna
What name are you using on Ancestry? I had a quick look for Corinna but couldn't find you on my husband's DNA match list. He is listed as Bruce Chapman. Of course, even if you and he are genealogically related, you won't necessarily share DNA because the relationship will be a relatively distant one. However, definitely worth checking.
