William Hinton, born c 1816, Wexford, church of England migrated to Canada in 1832. The only record I have found of a possible father is a James Hinton who came to Canada in 1832 under the auspices of a immigrant society in Quebec. James came with family but they were not enumerated. William had a sister, Ann, who was born in Quebec in c 1834, so I am assuming William came with parents. William married Nancy Jenkins in 1841 in Ontario. They named their first child Leticia and their second child Hugh and seemed to adhere to traditional Irish naming patterns. I am graping at straws as these are the only clues I have. I have no idea of possible parishes but I know the Hinton name is rare in Ireland and occurs mainly in Wexford. Thank you for any help.

  • The equivalent denomination here would Church of Ireland, but unfortunately there are currently very few Church of Ireland records available online for county Wexford - e.g. RootsIreland (pay-website) has partial transcripts for just two parishes, and the Anglican Records transcription project also includes two parishes (one of which is partially in Co. Wexford). This project is ongoing and over time further transcripts will be added - so worth keeping an eye out for further Co. Wexford parishes.

As you have seen the surname Hinton was not very common in Ireland, and in the mid 1800s most were located in Co. Wexford with a couple in counties Antrim, Down, Armagh & Roscommon. The earlier Tithe Applotment records (c1820s/1830s) show 10 entries for the surname Hinton (there could be duplication in these), all of which are in Co. Wexford - four in Enniscorthy, four in Clonmore civil parish.
