I have recently discovered relatives  from Borrisoleigh parish. John Cantwell ( from Summerhill Borrisoleigh) married Bridget/Biddy Kennedy Feb 1830 in Borrisoleigh. It says she was from Ileigh ( hard to read) . Their daughter Mary was born/ baptised in the RC Church of Sacred Heart 1/7/1834. Her sister Kitty was born Mch 1833. Mary is my ancestor who came to Australia. She died in 1881 in NSW . She married Daniel Shea( 1832-1864) from Killarney in Bathurst NSW in 1855. I think she came out with her siblings John, Catherine and Patrick on the Talavera in 1853. Not sure what happened to Kitty. It seems to match and says they were from Borrisoleigh. Any further information appreciated. I am coming to Tipperary in a few weeks to have a look at where they were from. Joanne

  • Thanks Miriam. I have realised that I was wrong about when she came out. I should have looked at page before on ship's list too. Wrong parents. They were Patrick and Ann Cantwell and 6 kids. From Borrisoleigh too. Probably related. I will have to look into that. It will help now I know her other siblings names . Mary was married in 1855 in Bathurst NSW . Maybe the whole family came out and that is why there are no records in 1901. Joanne

  • Just another query on the Cantwell family of Borrisoleigh. I know that Catherine(Kitty) and Mary Cantwell both came to Australia and ended up in Bathurst NSW where they both got married. They were children of John Cantwell and Bridget (Biddy) Kennedy. No one who has done research has found when they came out. My guess is that they came out on the Talavera in 1853 as assisted immigrants. They were married 1854 and 1855 in Bathurst so fits in. The family group is recorded as from Borrisoleigh. There is Patrick 47, Ann 35, Edward or Edmund( hard to read) 20, Honora 18, John 16, Catherine 15, Mary 14, Patrick 10. Mary and Catherine are noted as farm servants, not daughters. Their ages are not correct as they were baptised in 1833 and 1834. On the Griffiths Valuation list, Patrick has the land next to John.  There is a Patrick Cantwell (parents Edward, Alice) who comes to Bathurst and dies there 1889. Ann ( parents Edward, Mary) dies in Bathurst also in 1874. Do you think it is likely that Mary and Catherine came out with their uncle even though the ages are wrong. They all ended up in the same town in NSW. Any thoughts welcome. Joanne

Thanks Miriam for the advice. On Mary's death cert is has that her parents are John and Bridget. Catherine's does not have them listed as she has gone through 2 husbands and was 81 when she died. No one might have known. I have looked up some public member trees on Ancestry and they think that the Catherine and Mary who came out with Patrick are Anne are their daughters. There were no records attached though. There was another Catherine Cantwell who married in Bathurst in 1864 so could be the younger Catherine. Another version of the shipping record gave some more info though. It said their brother Edward was in the colony living in Bathurst and had sponsored them. An ancestry tree had John, Edward and Patrick brothers and sons of Edward Cantwell and Catherine Anne Hennessey. Patrick 's wife was Nancy ‘Anne’ Keating who is the sponsor on my Mary's baptismal record. I have found out that there is a Bathurst Pioneers Booklet with Cantwells in so I will order that to try to shed more light on the family relationships.  Thanks for your help.
