I am a bit confused on a location of children of John and Mary Kennedy Storen. Both of them were from Clare. The first 4 children were baptized inTemple Kelly, Ballina. Is Temple Kelly a townland? I see on google Temple Kelly cemeteries and ruins. What might have been the church where they were baptized. The records that I have show the parish as Ballina and the diocese as Cashel and Emly. What would have been the actual church? Is there a way to determine that. Do I ask the diocese? There are two churches in Ballina. I do not see anything on the record that indicates a church. For exmaple, for another relative, in another county, the first page of the record lists a St. Flannan's Church for the record. I would like to visit. Thanks.

  • Templekelly is the family residence and the parish is Ballina (sometime noted as Ballyna), Cashel and Emly Diocese, Co. Tipperary. Format of the Ballina baptisms at that time is - day of the month, child's name, father's name and surname, mother's name and maiden surname, names of sponsors (godparents), and then family residence.

Templekelly does not seem to be the name of an official townland, it seems to be a variation of 'Templeachally' which is the name of the civil parish for the area, including the town of Ballina. See the entry in Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837 - Templeichally, or Templekelly, also called Callathamery.

Ballina Catholic Parish had a number of churches (or Chapels). two at Ballina town (an old and new church) and Boher chapel in Ballinteenoe townland. The new church in Ballina would most likely have been the parish church (giving the parish name) at the time of the baptisms you mentioned so probably have taken place there. There's still a church on the same spot - although may not be the same building that was on the site in the 1860s.

  • When you say “family residence,” would that be a kind of hamlet, not quite a town? A group of homes but perhaps without any commercial businesses? I am just learning my ancestral locations and trying to get a picture of what they might have been, especially if the people were farmers. And for a baptism or other religious service, they would have traveled to the church in Ballina? Thank you.

  • Unfortunately in this case the residence recorded in the baptisms is not very specific as Templekelly (Templeachally) is the name of the civil parish which covered about 33 townlands plus the town of Ballina. Most of the townlands would have been rural areas.  You can read about the area as it was during the 1830s in the entry in Lewis Dictionary link I posted in the previous reply.

Given the location given for the family, the newer church in Ballina is really the only option - the old church in Ballina is not shown on later maps so was probably abandoned or demolished, and the other church for the parish is located in a different civil parish - i.e. Killmastulla.

The option for finding a more detailed residence for properties around this timeframe, especially if they were farmers, would be to use Griffith’s Valuation . The Primary Valuation (Griffith’s) for this area was carried out in 1850, so about 10 years before the children’s baptisms, but no sign that I could find of any Storen/Storan entries in the parish at that time. There were quite a few Kennedys...  To follow up further forward, i.e. into the 1860s would require checking the Revaluation Records (aka cancelled land books), these are available in the Valuation Office in Dublin City, and are not currently online.

  • I located a civil birth for a younger child to your John and Mary - Ellen Teresa Storen born 20th July 1866 in Newtown, Killaloe, father John Storen occupation mason, mother Mary Kennedy, residence is also given as Newtown. Ellen's father registered the birth on the 27th July.

Killaloe is the other side of the River Shannon from Ballina, so appears that your Storen/Kenndy family moved by 1866. I dont see a townland named Newtown nearby on the Killaloe side - wonder if maybe the reference was to townland of Newtown in Templeachally (Templekelly) civil parish across the river, a short distance north of Ballina town, you can see where this townland is located on the entry in the Placename Database.
