We are from Canada and will be visiting Ireland in September 2019. We have a strong Irish background and are looking for information on our great, great grandmother. Born September 24 1869 Borris, county Carlow. Father Robert Williams, mother Isabella Duncan. Given name at time of birth Isabella Williams. Married August 14,1890 to Thomas Murray (constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary) Married in district of Bagonalstown,County Carlow,Doonane Parish of Killabie,Heath,Borris.Church of Ireland. Three children,Clara B 1892,John B 1893,Thomas Victor B 1895. Passed away in Abbeyleix,County of Queens(Laois)March 16th,1900 at age 31. We are trying to locate the cemetary that she was laid to rest. Her children went to live with their grand parents and their aunt and uncle in Derryluskin Fethard Tipperary. All spoke English and were members of the Church of Ireland.

  • Newspaper Death notices often mention the church and graveyard, but when I checked I did not locate any notice for Isabella unfortunately. Her death records her place of death as Abbeyleix town so worth starting your search there, the Church of Ireland church (St. Michael & All Angels) and graveyard are located off Ballaculla Road, which is just off the southern end of the main street. There are some transcripts or the headstones & memorials for this graveyard on the From-Ireland Website (Jane Lyons) however I did not see any Murray entries (note - not all burials had headstones, and some my now be illegible, or fallen over). There are death/burial records available for the parish and cover up to 1911, these are held in South County Dublin in the Representative Church Body Library.

Another possibility might a burial back in Isabella's home parish - i.e. in Borris, Co. Carlow, the Church of Ireland church appears to be attached to Borris House (Estate), to the south of the town. I dont see a graveyard on the historic maps, but I would think that there would be one somewhere close to the church, possibly in the estate.

  • Have you searched on this website?   Irish Graveyards   https://www.irishgraveyards.ie/index.html     Searchable by surname or by the name of the graveyard.  There is a map with a marker for each graveyard surveyed.

  • Dear Don:

You might also check the Historic Graves website for graveyards associated with this family.  The link is here:  https://historicgraves.com

The RCB Library that Shane referred to is worth phoning/emailing as they will be able to look up a burial if it exists and tell you what graveyard Isabella is buried in.  The email to their offices is here:  https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/genealogy

If you need any further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
