Looking for information on these three families. My grandfather, Richard Gilchrist and is family lived in Tournant, Dunlavin in early 1900. Came to America in 1925. He worked at bicycle shop in Dunlavin and his father, Henry Gilchrist worked at Pennefather Estate. Eleanor Moody Gilchrist was his mother. I believe Eleanor’s father was Thomas Moody and her mother was   Annie Ubank.  Any information anyone has I would appreciate it!!

  • One of the witnesses to the marriage of Henry and Eleanor is an Anne Eubank...

for reference Giilchrist/Moody household 1901 at Rathsallagh Demesne townland, and  Gilchrist/Moody household 1911 also at Rathsallagh townland, where Richard was born. The family are shown as Church of Ireland, and based on the details given Henry would have been born around 1862 in Co. Carlow, and Elenor around 1877 in Co. Wicklow.

The marriage record for Henry & Eleanor in 1895 is quite difficult to read as the handwriting is a bit messy, but looks like her father's name is Thomas and her residence appears to end in Dunlavin, it's the first marriage for both, groom is 'full age' i.e. 21 or over, and the bride is 'minor' i.e. under 21. There's a promising match for her birth as Ellen Pheobe Moody at Tourant townland Dunlavin on the 23rd September 1876, father is Thomas a farmer, and mother is Anne Elizabeth Ubank.  Following on from the details for Ellen/Eleanor I located the marriage of her parents - Thomas Moody & Anne Ubank on the 4th February 1875, in Hacketstown Church of Ireland in Co. Carlow. The groom is shown as a farmer with residence at the time of marriage as Dunlavin Diocese of Dublin, and the bride's residence is Kilcarney in the parish of Hacketstown, their fathers are recorded as Christopher Moody and Richard Ubank, both farmers.

Henry would have been born before the start of civil registration of births, so a baptism search would be required to find more details on him.

  • The surname Ubank caught my interest.  There was a Ewbank/Eubank family in Yorkshire and County Durham in the North-East of England which was very distantly connected to a maternal English ancestral line of mine 200 years ago. They had business  interests which took them around Britain and abroad. One business was making carpets. I don't know if they were connected to the manufacturer of vacuum-cleaners in the 20th century.  Another was a planter in the Caribbean.

  • There are some entries  in Calendars of Wills and Administrations in National Archives of Ireland which may be relevant.

    www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/search/cwa/home.jsp

Be sure to read the last paragraph beginning  "Important"  on the Home page  as this explains about survival of wills. (Many were destroyed in a fire in 1922 during the civil war.)

Gilchrist: 3 in County Wicklow.  Anne 1906; Thomas 1913; James 1915;  plus 200 others around Ireland.

Moody: Several in Wicklow, including Thomas of Toonaut, Dunlavin, 1915, whose executors or beneficiaries were Christopher Moody and Henry Gilchrist. There may be alternative spellings of Moody.

Eubank:  County Carlow:  James and John, both of Lower Hacketstown. Administration granted to Jane Pollard.  25th March 1919 was date for both  - I don't know if this was the date they both died or the date probate was granted to Jane Pollard. The information is on index cards for James Eubank and John Eubank.

    Ubank:  3 in County Wicklow.

Arthur of Rathdrum 1866. He made a will.  Executor/beneficiary, Eliza Ubank, widow.

Anne Ubank, spinster, 1872; died intestate; probate granted to Robert Ubank, her brother, of Monamee. (It may be the same place as John Ubank below.)

John Ubank 1877, of Monameen, farmer. Executor Richard Ubank of Kilcarney, County Wicklow.

Some images require fiddling about with to see the page properly.

You should be able to find death registrations for those people.

  • Additional information from newspapers about some of the people in the Calendars of Wills and Administrations. (See earlier post).

A small farm at Hacketstown was sold in 1915 on the instructions of a Thomas Gilchrist.

Arthur Ubank, who died 1866, was Clerk of Rathdrum Union.

Link to a new thread about Ubank, Moody and Gilchrist families.
