James and Catherine Jess lived in Lace Lane Cork City in 1836.  He built Wine Barrels.  He received a Bounty to Immigrate to Van Diemans Land with his wife and one boy George aged 1.  They sailed on the William Metcalf, leaving Albion Docks in England in October 1836.

Thank you for taking the time to ask more questions.  Here are the answers so far as I know.

Catherine was a Lyons before she married.  Their  first born son was known as John (not George as above) born about 1835.  I think Catherine was Baptised on the 6th April 1811 at St. Finbarrs' (South) Cork City. Her father is Timothy Lyons and Mother, Margaret Jeffers. They applied using a Form for  Agricultural and Labourers and Mechanics Desirous of receiving a Bounty from Government for the means of Emmigrating to Van Diemans Land.  Their application was supported by their Minister Rev. Otway John Herbert of St. Anne's Shandon and the Mayor, Peter Bernard.  On the application form it states that they lived in Lace Lane Cork and that James is a Cooper.  There are two children John two years and Timothy under one year old.

  • Hi Sue,

Do you have any information on the maiden name of Catherine? I found a John Jess born to James and Catherine Jess in Cork in 1835. Catherines maiden name in this instance was Lyons. There are a few other instances of children in that era in Cork called John George Jess but without matching parents first names.

I dont have time at present to pursue the above information further but if you think this may be the correct family I will make the time to research it further. You can contact me through this message board or at frankfahy@eircom.net
