We are searching for information regarding Charles Gallagher and his wife, Giley. We found them in the 1901 Carrowkeel, Meentragh, Donegal, Ireland census record with sons named Hugh and James. And also in the 1911 Bunnaton, Knockalla, Donegal, Ireland with their son, Hugh.

1901 Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Carrowkeel/Meentragh/1191170/

1911 Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Knockalla/Bunnaton/503557/

We think they may be related to our 2nd great-aunt, Mary Gallagher, who according to family stories may have been from Bunnaton. She immigrated to the United States and married John H. McMonigle in 1858 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They later settled in Williamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania. Mary had a sister named Catherine Gallagher who was born about 1850 and also settled in Williamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania. Catherine married Michael Kane.

Thank you so much for your help Miriam!  This looks like they could be related to us. We are thinking Charles may be Mary’s brother and their father would be John.    Mary (b about 1842) and her sister Catherine (our 2nd ggmother b about 1850) each named their first child John and Mary names a later son Charles.  (We realize these don’t quite fit the traditional naming patterns but we may be missing children or perhaps they didn’t follow it strictly.       Also Mary Gallagher and her husband John McMonigle (married 1858 Philadelphia) later named buildings they owned “the Glenvar” and said they were from donegal.   A cousin researching in 1980 met a man named Joseph Donegal who grew up in Carrowreagh (a townland in the Glenvar valley) who said his grandmother used to talk about a John McMonigle and Mary Gallagher who went to America.  He showed our cousins the old houses where each had lived and said Gallagher was from Bunnintin and McMonigle was from Carrowreagh

We’ve been trying for 20+ years to find records in Ireland to know more about Catherine, Mary, and her husband.  We feel we have finally narrowed down the area they came from but welcome any help putting the pieces together.

Incidentally Catherine married Michael Kane from Tipperary in Williamsport Pennsylvania around 1869. They appear to have met in USA.
