I am looking for the family of John Edwards born about 1820 and Mary Healy born abt 1827 who emigrated to New York around 1844.

I recently came across a record transcription Ireland census Search forms for 1841 and found this Healy Family perhaps tenants of Michael Mccusker in the county of Tyrone and the parish of Donacavey.  listed are Mary Healy, daughter of Terence Healy.  John Edwards and Mary Healy's 2nd son was named Terence which would fit the traditional Irish naming pattern as Mary's father was also Terence.  The Edwards family lived in NYC from at least 1845 to perhaps 1855 and then moved to upstate New York in the Moriah/Ticonderoga area.

Their third son Francis was born in Brooklyn in 1850.  His godparents were Thomas and Ann Healy who may have been Mary's cousins.  Mary's brother was also Francis possibly named after her brother.

Here is a link to my STREETER3 tree on Ancestry.com:  https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/57558350/person/301181…

I will appreciate any help.  I want to know where in Ireland John and Mary are from.

  •  Hello Miriam,  Thank You for responding.

I do realize the naming convention cannot be relied upon but thought it  may offer clues in my search.  It does seem coincidental that the father's name is Terrence which it shuld be if the convention was followed.  John's father may have been George as their first born was George born 11 Dec 1845 in NYC.

I have been unsuccessful in finding any death or marriage information on this couple but will keep trying.  Not sure if  Mary and John married in New York, Ireland or England.  Unfortunately, BMD records in New York State can vary in availability as this documentation was not standarized until the the very late 1800's and not all counties complied even then.

I know she was very young around 16 or 17.

I will have to look at the document again but I am sure the applicant is Michael McCusker.  I am sure that John and Mary first names are probably very common in Ireland as they are here in America.

  • Yes, my search continues.  Thanks for your help.  I will be more careful to check the originals as opposed to transcripts of documents.  I have found many mistakes in transcriptions.
