Sharing my family genealogy below in hopes that someone recognizes a name because I'm at a standstill. (Also would love to find distant relatives!)  Initially I was hopeful that their children's names followed an Irish Naming custom, but as I've done more research I find they aren't so strict, so I'm unsure whether it's helpful to use these names to guess at a previous generation. Also, I'm wondering how the naming tradition changes when a new family is started?  It's interesting to see all the Rowe boys adopted "Francis" as a middle name - maybe to honor older step-brother who helped them with passage to the U.S?  Sincerely, Sherry

My 2g-grandmother, Bridget Mahon was born between 1850-52. (As reported in two marriage documents and the 1901 Cork Ireland Census, no birth certificate found yet.)

On 16 Jun 1866 Bridget marries George Tallon in Navan Parish with Joseph Neill and Bridget Fitzimons as witnesses. on civil records their father's are listed as Andrew Tallon and Patrick Mahon, both laborers. Prior to marriage, George (29) was a laborer who lived on Barrack Lane, Bridget (18) was a servant living on Cannon Row.

Bridget and George Tallon have six children together while living in the Millbrook neighborhood in Navan:

B. 3 Sep 1867 - Unknown    Michael Tallon

B. 16 Mar 1869 - D. 5 Nov 1869 Anne Tallon

B. 23 Dec 1870 - D. 16 Oct 1880 Patrick Christopher Tallon

B. 27 Dec 1872 - Unknown Andrew John Tallon

B. 16 Jun 1874 - D. 26 April 1951 John Francis Tallon

B. 10 Apr 1876 - D. 29 Dec 1950 Mary Alice Tallon

4 Feb 1876  Death: Husband George Tallon died while living on Cannon Row.  His burial was in Bohermeen/Ardbraccan. Their last daughter, Mary Alice Tallon, is born just a few weeks later in their new Cannon Row neighborhood.

20 Jan 1878  Re-marriage:  The widow Bridget Tallon re-married Michael Roe/Rowe in Navan Parish.  Marriage certificate states that Michael Roe is 23, a wool sorter, Bridget Tallon is 28, a seamstress living on Cannon Row in Navan. (I have no birth certificate for Michael.) Michael Rowe's parents are Thomas Roe/Rowe (miller) and Julia Commons.  In the Liber Mat., Bridget's parents are listed as Michael and Mary Mahon - not Patrick.  In attendance were Patrick Tallon (Bridget and George's son?) and Catherine (Katie) Daly, married to Navan physician Denis Bowes Daly. In civil documents Bridget's father is listed as Patt Mahon a miller and Michael's father as Thomas, a miller. Marriage attendants listed as Patrick Pigott and Katie Daly.

Bridget and Michael Rowe had seven children together while living on Cannon Row, all of these children emigrated to the US and died in Philadelphia, PA except for the youngest Anna, who died in Illinois:

B. 29 Jun 1879 - D. May 1977  Mary Bridget Rowe

B. 20 Feb 1881 - D. 27 Sep 1946  Thomas Francis Rowe

B. 13 May 1882 - D. 11 Feb 1911 Julia Rowe* (my grandmother)

B. 28 Sep 1883 - D. 31 May 1965 Josephine Mary Rowe

B. 26 Feb 1885 - D. 29 Dec 1957 James Francis Rowe

B. Abt 1887 - D. 28 Jul 1934 Laurence Francis Rowe

B. 4 Feb 1889 - D. 1 July 1972  Anna Marie Rowe

27 Apr 1900 Death Michael Rowe dies from a heart regurgitation valve in Cork, Ireland where they lived in #32 Evergreen Building (Cork Census 1901) I'm not sure when they arrived Cork, but guessing it was work-related as he was a wool sorter.

3 Aug 1901 Bridget arrived in New York aboard the SS Campania with her 7 Rowe children, son John Tallon met them at the gate. (He emigrated about 1889.)  Bridget Rowe made her home in Philadelphia, PA first in a home with her children - later living with her married children. She disappeared after the 1920 census. Ten of her children are buried in Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA.

(I have information regarding children's marriages, etc. if anyone is interested.)

  • Sherry,

I'm confident our families are connected in the Tallon line. My gggggrandfather was George Tallon, sons, Andrew, George, Patk, Daniel. daughter Mary and nieces Anne and Bridget living with him in 1841 census, Liscartin, Bohermeen/Ardbraccan parish. Daniel and Patk (ggggrandfather) emigrated to upper Ny state early1840s. Have been trying for years to track Andrew and

george and girls over here. Had found Bridget's marriage to Rowe but couldn't make the connection. IK retired to Ireland 9 years ago. Spending 3 days next week up in Navan. Would love to swap additional information if it is of interest to you

  • Hi Bill.

My Great-grandad was Bernard Roe, Michael's brother. In official documentation, they previously spelt the name "Rowe" but when Bernard lived in Cork, he was just "Roe". If I can help, let me know.

  • Sherry and Darragh, it's midnight here in Ireland and just read your posts. Sherry, you will not find a birth certificate for Bridget nor Michael as both were born prior to civil registratio which began in 1864. I do have access to parish records of Ardbraccan/Bohermeen which go back to 1820s and, I believe in Navan as well.  I'll do some looking tomorrow to see what I can find for you. I believe when I dig deeper that your George Tallon was the nephew of my gggrandfather Pat and grandson of my ggggrandfather George Tallon. Will check all resources I can and get back to you soon

  • Hi, Sherry. I have done some research and have what I think might be of use to you in Navan/Ardbraccan on the Rowes/Roe and Mahons. From the 1821 census and some from the parish records. I haven't done line by line in parish records yet until I could reach you. The census info is quite extensive. Would you consider giving me your email address as it will be easier to send by email?  My email is verdedrive@msn.com.  Think you will get some useful info. Bernard forename is new to me so need to concentrate on it also. Came across a census recoed where both a Mahon and a tallon were working in the same house not with their  parents.  Regards Bill

  • Sherry.  a p,s, Forget the traditional naming pattern. It prevails only in what are Gaeltacht areas which are locations scattered around the country that hold fast to Irish culture and customs. Meath is as far from being that as is Dublin as they were English strongholds. My Sullivan ancestors are from a Gaeltacht and the naming held true even after coming to the states! Not so in any of my other branches. Bill

My name is Bernard Rowe my gr grandfather was Laurence who was Michael and Bernard  brother.

We know about 1910 Bernard left Navan and went to St John street Mill in Cork, Bernard trained as a miller in Dunmoe mill and worked there until the mill declined working for the Commons family, I suspect that Commons hardware in Navan is related to that family.

Irish wheat was moist and had to be dried before milling where as cheaper American wheat was drier and did not have to be treated before milling so local products could not compete with these imports.

Bernards children were Edmond Francis, Theodore Bernard, Patrick Thomas, Michael James, Mary Veronica, Julia Anne, Rissanba and Margaret Josephine.

Sherry has turned up a photo from Patricia in the USA, (from Michaels family) of Thomas (Bernard's father) with Bernard, some of his brothers and three Tallon boys.

What is your family line and do you have any contact with the other Cork Roe's, do you have any photo's of the family that you could share, we can forward our family photo of Dunmoe mill if you wish.

  • My great grandfather was Bernard Roe from Navan, Meath. They moved to Cork, as you said and Bernard became a shoemaker and one of his sons, Theodore, was a tailor. I have lots of info on them, but no photos. I would love to see yours. Email at darraghbaldwin22@gmail.com

  • Berni, Darragh and Sherri,

Have you viewed Navan history site for the townland of Liscarton?  My Tallon family were from Liscarton which is in Ardbraccan Parish. The Liscarton history states that Peter Rowe was the owner of the estate in the 1400's!  You can reach the information at www.navanhistory.ie. Then on the index select townlands H - L for Liscarton.  You might source Ardbraccan parish records at website: www.registers.ie .  I just did a quick look a few days ago and found a few Roe/Rowe entries as well as Mahons.  An example - Anne Roe baptized 01 Jan 1840 to Michael Roe and Ann Donohue, sponsors Patk Roe and Mary Donohue.  In the 1821 census there were Boyerstown, Ardbraccan, Thomas Rowe, age 28, laborer, residing with and a nephew of,Donal Dunn,, as well as Thomas' sister Mary, age 19.  Also in Ballybatter, Ardbraccan were Alice Rowe, age 56, farmer. Her son Patk age 34, son John, age 32, son Edward, 16; son Christopher, age 13 and daughter Bridget, age 19.

Sherri, there were Mahons in the townlands of Jamestown, Allanstown, Anthelstown/Donoghmore. In one instance there were both a Philip Mahon and a Margaret Tallon working in the same household in Allenstown in the home of a farmer by the name of Backelham!!!

  • Hi Bill,

Many thanks, I am aware of Liscarton, however we do not have a Peter or Nicholas names in our family, these names are about and there may be some family connection but without any records it will be difficult to confirm.

I have gone through the parish records around Navan and have a list of Roe/Rowe Births, Deaths and Marriages which I need to build a timeline and see how they all fit together.

For example Eleanor Roe married in Killeen but she attended baptisms in Navan, she married in her home town but had Connections with Navan.

I will quote Susan Roe who married in Navan to Michael Caffrey, her children were born in Kells, Killeen, Athboy, Dublin, Dublin, Dublin, Dublin, Sligo, Sligo, Sligo, from this you can see that the children were born across the country but a child was born in Killeen. So does the family have some connection here or the surrounding area.

Thomas Roe and Alice King from Ballybatter are well documented John 1789, Joseph 1794, Pat 1796, however the census 1821 gives us Pat 34, John 52, Thomas 29,  John from the baptism register would be 32, Joseph 27, Pat 25, Thomas is not in the Navan baptism register but the census gives us 1793.

There is a 3 year gap between John and Thomas, a 2 year gap between Thomas and Joseph and a 2 year gap between Joseph and Pat, biologically this family stacks up, although this branch has the same surname we do not have a current DNA match.

By using the naming pattern we could say that John would be John Roe Thomas's father, Thomas Thomas King Alice's father and if the records survive see if we can locate them.

A John Rowe died in Kells 1797 , John Roe died Ballenthor park 1822, if we look in the 1821 census there is 6 Thomas Kings so the name exists in and around Navan.

The Navan birth register ends 1813 and starts 1842, Marriages start 1853, the church was built 1815-1818 as the chapel was too small for the congregation so have the records been lost or was there no records between this time.

I can trace Pat Roe, Butcher in Trim, his son Edward married Rose King publican, they have several children and the parents contract TB, Stephen takes over the business married Elizabeth Kelly (top of my head) has several children both parents contract TB, but I cannot trace through the Navan parish registers.
