Hello,

John Sullivan and Margaret Graney were married in the Newmarket Catholic Church, Newmarket, Cork, on 24 February 1850. You can view a transcription of their marriage at the Find My Past (FMP) website link at:

There are two facing pages to the register. The marriage for John Sullivan and Margaret Graney is the last entry on the right-hand page. You can enlarge the page by means of round icons in the upper center/ right of the screen. The icons are white with green backgrounds. You can also access the full-screen function by clicking on the last icon on the right with the two arrows pointing northeast and southwest.

The first name of one of the witnesses to the marriage is Andrew. I couldn’t make out his last name. The name of the second witness is John Graney, who may have been Margaret’s brother.

According to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage/Buildings of Ireland website, the name of the Catholic Church in Newmarket is St. Mary’s, built in 1840. The Buildings of Ireland description of the church places its location on Chapel Street. But then, a map from the Buildings of Ireland website places the location of the church on Island Road. I believe this street has gone by both names over time. See the map at: http://webgis.buildingsofireland.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?REG_NO=20819008

You’ll have to enlarge the map to view the location of the church on Island Rd. The church is situated under the orange dot within a black circle just below Main Street.

According to the Newmarket & Taur Catholic Parish website, the full name of church is the Church of the Immaculate Conception St. Mary’s Church. The other church in the parish is called Church of the Holy Spirit, in Taur. The Church of the Holy Spirit in Taur, according to the website, celebrated its centenary in 2015, which means it was constructed in 1915.

Next, I found the baptism transcription for John and Margaret’s daughter, Julia, who was baptized in Newmarket on 16 April 1850. Her parents were married less than two months before Julia was baptized, meaning that John and Margaret had married when they did so that Julia would not be born out-of-wedlock. Julia’s baptism is on the left-hand page, 3rd entry down from the top. The last name of one of the witnesses looks like Sullivan. I couldn’t make the person’s last name. The first name of the second witness is Mary, but I could not tell what her last name was.
