Hello everyone, i am looking for some help or of anyone who has the same connection. My 2nd great grandmother was Susan Quinn who married Thomas Ahern in 1892 in Cork. I have the marriage transcript. In the 1901 census and 1910 census it says she was born in Co. Cork as my my 2nd great grand father Thomas. On the marriage cert it states her father is Thomas Quinn a carpenter and is deceased. I can't find any birth record for Susan Quinn at all or any records for her father Thomas.

She has a witness to her marriage called James Quinn who i figured out is likely her Cousin and his Father was Matthew Quinn. Gathering all thos info Matthew and Susans Father Thomas were brothers. In the 1901 census for Matthew it says he was born in Wicklow and in the 1911 census it says he was born in Dublin and he also had a daughter around the same year of my 2nd great grandmother called Susan Quinn but she emigrated.

I have come up with nothing for a death for my 3rd great grandfather Thomas Quinn in Cork. I really have hit a brick wall as the only explanation is Susan Quinn's birth was not registered. Anyone know of where i go from here and know of them.

Thanks so much

Chrissy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The marriage record in 1892 indicated that Susan was 27 in 1892 which means her birth year was 1865. Howver, it would not surprise me if Susan actually made herself younger when she filled out the form. In that case her actual year of birth might have been pre-1864. As you likely know, civil registration of births started in 1864 so a record would not exist if she was born pre-1864.

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland for the years 1855-1865 for Susan Quinn baptismal records with father Thomas. Only one record came up in Co. Antrim. See below. Treat this record as a lead.

Since Thomas was a carpenter, likely he travelled around for work.

Regarding the Thomas Quinn death record, it will take time but you could search the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for Thomas Quinn death records from 1878-1892. There are 166 records. Some you can eliminate because of the age of the deceased. Prior to 1878, we only have index records for deaths.

  • In the 1901 census, the couple’s 3 children were all born in Cork City whereas Susan & Thomas were born in Co. Cork. That suggests to me that they were born outside Cork city itself. So you would need to search all of Co Cork.
