Still searching for a connection to my Co. Clare Collinses.  They may have moved from elsewhere but my Maternal Gr-Grandfather, John Collins, son of Michael & Joanna Purcell, definitely had cousins from Kilkee.   Michael's brother Austin Collins had at least 3 children b. there:  Anthony b. abt. 1834; Bridget b. Aug 2, 1837 & John b. Jan 18, 1840. (I have their records from St. Senans).  Michael's other brother, Anthony and his sister Honora (Cornelius O'Brien) lived in the area as well.  I believe she d in 1844 & is buried at Kiltinnaun (Banaha) Cem.  Nine of these Collins & O'Brien cousins migrated to Philadelphia PA and mostly St. Louis, Mo.  Later all settling in Davenport, IA  where several were buried at St. Mary's cemetery.  The Collins name is found in all the areas around the Loophead as listed in the Freeholders, Tithe & Griffiths lists.  I would like to hear from anyone who can help me place my John around Kilkee.  Jo Banks.

  • Miriam, I am very grateful for your reply.  Looking quickly, I do not show any records for Michael Collins in Carrigaholt.  However, I have many for Moyarta, from 1819 on Lisheenfurror, Donoughboy, Moveen, Kilballeyowen, Kilfearagh and others.  The Michael you found, age 95 at 1883 death,  could have been the father of John Collins b 1819-20 as he would have been 31 or 32 at the time of John's birth.  I had found a Moyarta Gravestone inscription which listed one erected by a Michael Collins for his son, Thomas, who d. July 6, 1855 at age 27-so b. 1828 as a possible brother to my John b. 1819-20.   The Johanna Collins you found who d. in 1873 might be John's Mother, though age 92 could not be true.  I agree, here in the states as well, some records are obviously "guesses".  You are right, knowing where she died would help.  My John Collins m. Eliza Fitzpatrick of (I now think) Gleninagh, Co. Clare in St. Louis, MO in 1853 so the 1859 m. to Blackhall would not have been his.  Austin's children Baptized at St. Senan's Kilkee were:  Bridget b Aug 2, 1837 and John b Jan 18, 1840.  Another older brother, Anthony was b abt. 1834 in Kilkee ( from his tombstone in St. Mary's Cemetery, Davenport, IA.  Bridget d. Nov 17, 1889 and John d. Aug. 15, 1902 were also buried there.)  I will review all of my records centering on the Moyarta Carrigaholt area.  Narroweing it down helps a great deal.   I will also send for Johanna's record.   Thank you for your time and interest in my quest.  Jo
