My great grandmother Ellen Irwin married John Deignon on 25 March 1871 in a Catholic Cathedral in Cork City. At the time, Ellen stayed at 40 Leitrim Street, Cork. The marriage certificate listed John as being resident in Saltcoats and a sailor. Shortly after their marriage they both moved to Saltcoats and raised a family.
Im trying to find out more about where John and Ellen were born and their families.
John's father was also called John Deignon (listed on his marriage certificate as a dealer (?) deceased before 1871). There are no listings on the Scottish records of a John Deignon being born which leads me to believe he was born in Ireland and had become resident in Saltcoats due to him being a sailor. John was listed as 22 at his wedding in 1871.
Ellen's father was James Irwin a soldier, listed on the wedding certificate and deceased before 1871. Ellen was 21 at her wedding in 1871.
I could only find one Ellen Irwin on the irish genealogy site who was born in Coolroe in County Kerry in 1849, which would make her 21 at her wedding date. However I am not confident of using the search sites and was hoping somebody could check and confirm this.
