Hello! I was hoping to find the county of origin for my second great grandmother, Bridget Kearney. Bridget came to Philadelphia from Ireland (departed from Liverpool) aboard the "Saranak" on July 2, 1857.  Her father was Francis Kearney (born about 1817) and her mother was Margaret (born about 1813 in Ireland).  Their children were as follows: Francis (born abt 1847), Mary (about 1849), Margaret (about 1850), Bridget (about 1853) and Jane (about 1856).  Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated!  Regards, Dawn

  • Dawn,

Rootsireland has the baptism of a Francis Kearney on 1.11.1845 in Maghera, Co Derry. Parents Francis Kearney and Margaret Lagan. Sponsors Pat & Ellen Lagan. Also Brigid, to same parents, on 6th Feb 1849 in Termonmaguirk parish, Co Tyrone. Sponsors Francis unknown & Anna Kelly.

Searching on Ancestry I found Francis & Brigid as above plus Margaret bapt 9.9.1855, residence Granaghan, Co Derry; James 13.10.1850 same townland; Patrick 1.11.1843 Maghera parish, un-named child 22.9.1848 (same townland) & Alice 25.4.1841 in Termonmaguirk. All to the same parents.

Possibly there were 2 separate couples of the same names. One in Maghera and the other in Termonmaguirk. The two places are not too far apart and the couple might have moved.

Griffiths Valuation for 1859 has a Francis Kearney farming in Granaghan. He had plot 3, a 52 acre farm (so probably quite well of by the standards of the day). That farm, today is up a lane off the Halfgayne Rd, near Swatragh. Francis was replaced in those records by James in 1890. Francis died 15.1.1882, aged 82. A widower. Informant was his son Joseph.

I suspect these are those Kearneys in Granaghan in the 1901 census. I see a Bridget still in Ireland, so possibly not your family, after all.
