Richard Coe and Sarah Staples Family.
I am looking for information of Richard Coe (born c1790 in Ireland) and Sarah Staples (born 1789 in Gorey, Wexford-d 1876, Canada). Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Staples (b 1748, Gorey, Wexford) and Jane Bell (1757, Wexford – d 1823, Atlantic Ocean). Richard and Sarah were married in 1814 in Kilkenny. I don’t know why there. The family immigrated to Canada in 1823.
Richard and Jane Coe had 8 children, 6 of whom were born in Wexford, Ireland. All except one died in Canada
1. Jane (1815 – 1868)
2. John Frederick (1818 – 1880)
3. Frances (1819 – ?)
4. Elizabeth (1819-1909)
5. Francis (1820-1913, Ireland)
6. Margaret (1822-1886)
and born and died in Canada
7. Mary 1824-1907)
8. Anne (1826 – 1886)
I am looking for any information on Richard’s parents and the family’s life in Ireland.

V.J.,
This is the only baptism record for Richard from www.rootsireland.ie/ 1790 + - 5 years from any county; either it's the same one repeated or the first died so they named the second the same.
I notice his first son was John which fits the Irish naming pattern but second daughter would need to be Jane

The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 2 Richards and 1 James Coe in Wexford in 1824
Wexford records do not appear in the Irish Census until 1851 but there are no Coes

Did not expect such a quick reply! Thank you.
The family immigrated in 1823 so unless they still owned property in Ireland, the applotment books won't work for me. I wish they had stayed until the census began.
In Canada the family was Methodist. Could children be baptised in the Methodist Church? I know in England at sometime Catholics had to have a marriage in the C of E to make it legal. But I don't see that applying to baptisms. Richard could have been born in the 1780s. I don't see any family in the 1825 census (Quebec only) But shall have to have another look at early Ontario censuses.
Early settlers, exect Catholics, in Canada frequently became whatever religion was represented near to them. In the early 1800s in eastern Ontario Methodist were the majority in the rural areas. So religion
Thank you for another clue to check out.

Hello, not sure if you're still looking for information but I hope you find this helpful. I am of Caribbean descent with the surname Stapleton. I traced back some info in regards to plantations and where my surname comes from.
I found out my surname comes from Kilkenny and Tiperary (hope i'm spelling those right)!!
But the name wasn't always Stapleton. It was originally Staples which means blacksmith, and the ton, meaning on the hill, was added later on probably in county Wexford. So it might help if you also research the surname Stapleton, because it's possible your family name may have changed. Hope that was helpful. If you type Stapleton plantation on google, click on the escholar manchester link.Happy searching

Hello, I'm not sure if you are still looking but I found some information that could be helpful. Maybe you already know about them. I can't post links but I'll describe what I found and hopefully you can find it.
The Find A Grave page for Jane Bell has a story about how she died on the boat on the way over and they hid her body from the captain so she could be buried on land, not at sea.
There is a society of Descendants of Thomas Staples. They have published newsletters over the years and had a reunion with over 500 people in 1958. See The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville Ontario Thurs Aug 14th, 1958. I haven't been able to figure out how to contact them but I bet someone out there knows quite a bit!
A man named Thomas Chistopher Staples wrote a book Thomas Staples, 1748-1825; family genealogy in 1966. I can't find a copy of it.
There is a book McHolland : the story of David "Old Daniel" McHolland and his descendants by Green, Linda Martin Jacobs 1999 that says it also talks about the descendants of Thomas Staples and Jane Bell. I also can't find a copy of it.Good luck and please share if you find anything interesting!
