Hello, I have been trying to locate my Irish roots. My 2nd great grandfather was William Francis Ward born 1861 in Northern Ireland (the record says Belfast/Antrim but I'm not sure if that's exact). That is as much as I know on his origins.
I did an ancestry DNA test and found someone distantly related (4th cousins). I contacted and asked if he had any of my ancestral surnames and he did! His 2nd great grandmother is Ann Ward, born 1846. He indicated she and her husband (Peter Maguire) married at Black Bog church. He also mentioned Peter/Ann suspectedly died of Typhus in 1897.
I'm guessing William and Ann were brother and sister and I was wondering if you might be able to verify that. I do not know who William or Ann's parents were.
Thanks in advance!

Chip,
Black Bog church appears to be near Edenclaw in the parish of Magheraculmoney, in Co. Fermanagh.
I cannot find a marriage between a Peter Maguire and Ann Ward but there was between James Maguire of Dromore Big and Ann Ward of Portinode. That took place at Black Bog chapel on 13.2.1866. Perhaps that’s the couple you are trying to link with?
Ann’s father’s name and occupation are blank on the marriage certificate, suggesting she didn’t know who he was. Tracing her line back further may prove challenging, unless the RC baptism records help. Going by her age in the marriage certificate (20) she was born c 1846.
James Maguire died on 13.2.1897 aged 55. Cause of death was “probably bronchitis.” His daughter Mary was the informant. Ann died before him.
If you search the Irish genealogy site records for Maguire births registered in Irvinestown, you should find their children. I can see Isabella 12.1.1867; Patrick 12.11.1870 & Mary 9.1.1873. There were probably others. This appears to be Mary in the 1901 census:

This is probably her in 1911:

That's great info Elwyn, thanks so much! Yes you are correct, it was Ann Ward and James Maguire. So Ann was from Portinode. Are you able to find a link between her and William (possibly her brother) there?

Chip,
I can’t immediately help with Ann and William’s relationship. As I mentioned, Ann’s father’s name is blank on her marriage certificate, suggesting she didn’t know who he was, which often means she was illegitimate. (The groom’s father’s name is given so I don’t think it was a clerical mistake). But linking her to others when we don’t have her parents names will obviously be very difficult, unless you can show a strong DNA link perhaps.
In addition to the civil marriage certificate, there should also be a church record of the marriage (which sometimes contains additional information). Black Bog chapel was in Culmaine, part of Magheraculmany RC parish. (Black Bog chapel closed in 1957). The records are on-line on the nli site, but there are no marriages for February 1866. It appears the priest didn’t record them. Or perhaps there was a separate book which is lost.
You could search the parish records for Ann’s baptism to see if that shows who her parents were. https://registers.nli.ie
I looked in Griffiths Valuation for Portinode in 1862 and there were about 17 homes in the townland. There was just 1 Ward household and that was headed by Hugh Ward. I’d guess therefore that was where Ann lived and she is related to Hugh in some way.
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
Hugh had plot 11a which was an 11 acre farm. His name is replaced in the Valuation Revision records (which take Griffiths forward) by John Ward in 1868, suggesting Hugh may have died.

I searched the statutory death records but did not find any matching death so can’t say for certain. Hugh may have died before 1864 which is when death registration began. (Griffiths clerks were sometimes out by a few years with their dates).
John was born c 1840. Here he is with his family in 1901:

I noticed the marriage for what must be John’s sister on 24.4.1879. Mary Ward d/o Hugh married James Monaghan (widower & farmer) of Leaghan, at Ederney chapel. There were no Monaghan households in Leaghan in the 1901 census.

Hi I'm a great granddaughter of Mary Ward that yous are talking about. Her father was Francis as far as my uncle says but I also believe her brother also to be Francis. Between 1896 and 1911 he's registered at portnode Kesh Co Fermanagh . In the 1901 census her brother John seems to reside there.
