I am looking for information about my great grandfather Alexander Mooney.
All I have found so far is that he was born on August 20 1884. He sailed to the US on the Columbia from Derry on 5/18/1907 and was to meet up with a cousin named Patrick Mulholland in New York. He married Elizabeth Maguire/McGuire on 11/11/1910 in New York. My grandmother was born in New York in 1911 and the three of them went back to Ireland because Alexander could not find work. Alexander and Elizabeth returned to New York some time before the 1915 New York census but left my grandmother in Ireland.
Alexander is in the 1930 and 1940 US census but the story is he returned to Norther Ireland.
Thank you for any help.

Veronica,
I can find no trace of a birth for an Alexander Mooney in Ireland on the exact date you have given – 20th August 1884. However that’s not unusual. Few people in Ireland celebrated birthdays in the 1800s and often didn’t know their date of birth or exact age. If officialdom asked for a date of birth they often just made one up. So the date you have may not be totally accurate. The nearest I can find is an Alexander born on 25.8.1883 in Farrintemple Glebe, Co Londonderry. His parents were Elliott (or perhaps Alexander) Mooney and Susan Mooney (maiden name Mooney). They married on 22.2.1874 at Glenullan Chapel. The father’s name on Alexander jnr’s birth certificate is Elliott, but on his siblings birth certificates and on his father’s marriage certificate the name is Alexander.
Here’s the family in 1901:

Alexander junior has gone by the 1911 census so that fits with your information.

Susan Mooney died 2.2.1911. Informant was Ellen Mullan, daughter.
I searched for a death for Alexander jnr post 1940, in Northern Ireland. The only one I found between 1940 and 1969 was on 19.1.1946 aged 76, registered in Ballymoney. You would need to view the certificate to see if it could be your ancestor. You can view it on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:
You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
There are a couple of other Alexander Mooneys born around 1884. What you probably need to do now is find your Alexander’s 1910 marriage certificate and check his parents names to see if they match the possible family I have found.
