My 2nd Great Grandmother, Bridget Briordy was born in Nov 1849 in Scrabby District. She married Matthew Lantry in Scrabby District in 1870. In 1866 they were listed in the Catholic Parish register for Drumlumman North, Loughduff in the Ardagh parish with their children Thomas and Mathew. Their daughter Mary (my Great Grandmother) was born in Scrabby District on June 15th, 1864 but was not listed in the parish register with them in 1866. Both of her parents (Bridget and Mathew Lantry) are listed on her marriage certificate so I know that they were her parents. Was it unusual that Mary might have been born out of wedlock during that time? I'm trying to figure out how to unscramble this and where to go for resources. Mary came to Boston and died in 1953 at the age of 90.

Carol, I found a marriage for Mathew Lantry and Briget Briody (more common spelling) in Cavan in 1861 (rules out a 1949 birth) 12th March witnesses were Thomas Lantry and Catherine Smith, there are only 3 baptisms listed on Roots Ireland(subscription site) for those parents, these are Thomas in 1866, Michael in 1868 and Alice in 1871. I searched all Ireland under those parents, however civil registration was introduced in 1864 and those parents registerd a Mary on 3rd July 1864, birth date appear so be given as 4th June. I would be a bit suspicious of that date as it is exactly a month later it is registered and there was a fine for failure to register within a month. I attach the entry from the register, it can be found on the Irish Genealogy site which is free but log in to civil registration, it was registered in Granard, Longford which appears to be the civil registration area for Scrabby. I also noted a Mathew Lantry had 3 entries in Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, if you are familiar with this is should show you were he lived and possibly Briody nearby. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Griffiths Valuation, probably mid 1850s http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ actually 1855 in Derries Townland. Facebook pages dealing with Cavan Genealogy there are 2, apply to join if looking for relatives locally as I do not live locally. However I searched them for Lantry and drew a blank. (Have Cavan ancestors).

I have no idea why there is no baptism record unless the records for that year are missing or the priest forgot to enter it, in my own case after years of searching I discovered only the mothers name was recorded in the register.

feel free to revert and good luck,

    Pat
