I have the death cert (see attached) from White Plains, NY for my gg grandfather Rodger McFadden (b. 1839 Ireland - d. 1917 White Plains, NY).  It says that his father was "Feridal McFadden".  What kind of name is "Feridal"?  Rodger McFadden was born in Ireland in 1839, in 1860 he married Isabella Loughran (also born in Ireland) in Kirkcudbright Scotland, and they are listed in the 1861 Kells Kirkcudbrightshire Scotland census.  My great grandmother, Hannah was born in 1863 in Mossdale, Kirdcudbrightshire. Rodger emmigrated first in 1867 to NY and Isabella and her baby, and two toddlers emmigrated the following year.

Also, I do not know where my gg grandfather Rodger was from in Ireland, I picked the Donegal County to post this, because of all the McFaddens there.

The death cert is attached, and I am baffled by my triple great grandfather's given name  of "Feridal" and wonder if anyone has heard of this name? Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think that the informant for the death record had the given name slightly incorrect. The name was likely Ferrigal instead of Ferridal. The Gaelie Fearghail means Farrell. I looked at the 1901 census and found around 30 people with the given name of Ferrigal/Ferigal/Ferrigle. All of them lived in Co. Donegal.

Finding RC church records in Co. Donegal prior to 1850 is very difficult so I was not surprised when I did not locate a baptismal record for Roger McFadden.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

I was thinking overnight that I should give you the Ferrigal McFadden records that I located out of the 30 Ferrigals or so that I located. Sometimes names are past down from grandfather to grandson. The first one is up in the northwest corner in the Cross Roads area  ( I also have McFaddens from this area. My great-grandmother Catherine McFadden emigrated to Philadelphia around 1868). The next two are in tthe same family which is in Mevagh parish to the northeast of Crossroads.

  • Roger,

Thanks so much for the information.  The informant was my 2nd great uncle, David F. McFadden and now I wonder if the "F" for middle name stood for "Ferrigal".  I thought maybe the name was "Feridal" was Latin, thanks for giving me the Gaelic spelling, that is the original spelling of his name and I will add that.   "Ferrigal" must be the phonetic spelling of "Fearghail".   I have not done research in Donegal, thank you for the national archive links.    I notice the "Castle Roscommon" after your name.  I have done research in East Galway/Roscommon as I have many relatives from Moat on my mothers side.  I also have a gg grandmother on my Dad's side born in Roscommon but am hoping to find out her last name through a US death cert.

My grandmother, Nora Roddy, emigrated in 1906 to Philadelphia. She lived just outside the town of Ballaghaderreen in Co. Roscommon which is in Castlemore parish.

  • Roger,  My Tiernans and Croghans were in Moat, Creggs, Co Roscommon, I think it is now considered Co Galway.    I think my Flynns and Dalys were from Roscommon also.  I just found the name of my gg grandmother in a newspaper obit, it was Ellen Lough.    That would be quite a change for your gg grandmother to go from CO Roscommon to Philadelphia.
