Grace and Carney families in Carlow

My ancestor John Carney (any spelling) was one of seven children found so far of John Carney and Judith Rogers.  He was born about 1830.  When he came to Australia in 1856 a Mrs Smart paid 5 pounds towards his fare and was entered as his sister.  The only Mrs Smart found in Sydney at that time was Alicia Grace from Carlow.

 Alicia Grace aged 17 arrived 16 Aug 1841 On Pearl - born Carlow, Carlow.  House Servant.  RC could read and write.  Imported by Nicholas James and Company.  Father Edmund Grace, Gentleman (dead) and Maria his wife dead.  John Carney stated she was his sister when he arrived and she paid the 5 pounds for his passage.  She was Mrs Smart then.

I can not find how they could be related.
