This is my first day here and I've been using ancestry.com to research my family tree. However, I am finding it difficult to know if what I have is accurate. With a name like McCarthy it's a bit difficult to know. What I have thus far is:

Great Grandfather: Michael McCarthy DOB: AUG 1864 in Killa Vullen, Ireland County Cork

DOD:  20 DEC 1914 • Brooklyn, New York

Great Grandmother: Bridget Delahanty DOB: November 1864 in county Cork.

DOD: 12 MAR 1912 • Brooklyn, New York

I have some other details but it appears what I have is after their arrival to America.

As I'm not sure what or how much information is needed I'll stop for now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Deborah

P.S. is there another editor besides rich & plain text that I could use for the message boards? I'm not use to this anymore LOL!!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Do you have the parents names for Michael and Bridget? I searched on Roots Ireland for Michael McCarthy in the Killavullen RC parish records and got no record. Same with Bridget. I searched on Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie site and got no record. For your information, civil registration of births started in 1864 and the only Bridget Delahanty record that I found in 1864 was in Co. Tipperary and that Bridget was born in July.

    Michael's parents:

John Lynch McCarthy DOB:  08 APR 1836 • Waterford, Cork, Ireland (John's middle name is his mother's maiden name)

Elizabeth H Phelan DOB: OCT 1839 • Norwich, Norfolk, England

    Bridget's Parents:

Andrew S Delahanty DOB:  NOV 1852 • Ireland (I really don't think this is accurate as he would have been 12 when Bridget was born)

Bridget Whelan DOB: PRE 14 JULY 1852 (BASED ON BAPTISMAL RECORDS) • Ireland (and again she too would have been 12 when Bridget was born.

My issue with the ancestry database is there are so many McCarthy's and this is my birth (I was put up for adoption at 2 weeks of age) mother's family. When i found her (and subsequently 7 other siblings) in 1984, we weren't discussing genealogy. The info I have is oral history and the ancestry documents. So the info you have for the Bridget you found may very well be my Bridget and what I have is off.

    Thank you Roger.

I had no luck finding a baptismal record for John McCarthy or Bridget Delahanty. I'm wondering if John was born in England since his mother was born there

Delahanty/Delahunty is primarily a Kilkenny/Tipperary/Waterford surname but no record for Bridget turned up on Roots Ireland.

  • Roger,

Wanted to let you know, your hunch on John McCarthy being born in England was spot on. The flood gates of information are now open for that branch. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

  • Richard,

I found the attached on rootsireland.ie for John's parents, Michael Carty (wondering if the spelling is correct) and Julia Lynch. I believe this to be their marriage license based on her name.

Do you know how accurate these documents are? I ask because of the spelling of his last name, it's missing the MC (McCarty) and/or the H (McCarthy, this being the family name as i know it). Could this have been an accidental omission?

Here is a link to the part of the parish register for Youghal church which contains marriages for 1833. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000631897#page/1/mode/1up

There is a filter where you can select marriages 1833 and february and it should take you to the page with the marriage entry.

Mc and O were frequently not used in the 19th century. I've seen Carty many times for Carthy.
