    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Henry or his marriage record to Ann. You don't mention the religious denomination but RC records for Moville start in 1847. The Presbyterian records (1833) and the Church of Ireland records for Moville Lower parish (1876) start later . The Moville Upper parish records start in 1804.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Moville Lower and Moville Upper civil parishes show multiple Carey/Cary and Quigley entries.

  • Many thanks. Henry said on his landing documents in Australia he was Presbyterian and his wife was Catholic. All their children were christened Catholic. A number of his wife's family, also came out but not much hp as to exact place of abode. One had hotels in Williamstown Victoria so be may have owned land sold to pay for the investment. This business paid a heavy price for a number of relatives, even Henry.Carey who seemed to like a drink. Henry said he was a tide surveyor, but not sure what that involved. His father had the same occupation. I was told it was a tithe surveyor but feel this is wrong as he was a sea captain in Victoria and I enclosed a marine document for his father John. How amazing is the net to find this document, almost certainly my relative. When Henry died there was post mortem held in the basement of a pub as no mortuary built in Williamstown in 1853.
    Kind regards

  • I would see if there is a list oh goalkeepers in Moville, as this might explain how a Quigley would run a number of hotels in early.Williamstown. Not everyone has such skills, although he may well have worked in a hotel.
