My great aunt, Mary Josephine McCullough, was born in Drogheda in 1895. Her mother died when she was about 3 and she may have been brought to Australia as a child, possibly by an aunt named Mary Ann King. Does anyone have any suggestions as how to track down someone who went to Australia, essentially as an adopted child, but with adults whose names I don't know?

  • Hi J,

I assume you have this record from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:Mary Josephine McculloughDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:23-Mar-1895Address:William StParish/District:DROGHEDAGender:UnknownCountyCo. Louth
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Francis McculloughMother:Margaret KingOccupation:
    Informant 1:Francis Kellet
    Informant 2:Susanna Mulloy

I wonder if the informants could have been involved in her move to Oz?

I couldn't find a death record for Margaret McCullough in Louth; there are some from other counties but none with husband Francis

Here's the parents' marriage record but it doesn't have either of the fathers' or mothers' names to assist with looking for siblings of Margaret.

It doesn't have her age to narrow down birth year either!

    Date of Marriage:29-Jul-1889
    Parish / District:DROGHEDA
    County:Co. Louth
    Husband Francis McCullough Roman Catholic
    WifeName MargaretKing Roman Catholic

    Witness 1: GeorgeHalpin
    Witness 2: CatherineWade

Do you know which state they arrived in; if not, where did they end up?

ancestry.com has passenger lists and there are assisted & unassisted passenger lists for most states but may not be as laste as 1898

IF Margaret was born in Drogheda, there are 2 baptisms which might be her; I then searched for other children of the parents and found:

    Name:Mary Anne KingDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:30-May-1866Address:
    Parish/District:DROGHEDAGender:UnknownCountyCo. Louth
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:James KingMother:Mary HaffertyOccupation:
    Informant 1:Patrick Kerley
    Informant 2:Margaret Hafferty

    Name:Margaret KingDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:29-Aug-1868Address:
    Parish/District:DROGHEDAGender:UnknownCountyCo. Louth
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:James KingMother:Mary HaffertyOccupation:
    Informant 1:Michael Mcaardel
    Informant 2:Rose Sullivan

So Margaret did have a sister Mary Anne

I couldn't find a Louth marriage record fro Mary Ann so she could have brought Mary Josephine out; however, I searched for Mary Josephine + no surname with birth year in passenger lists on ancestry but no luck so tried for Mary King born 1866 + / - 5 on passenger lists but still no luck.

Let us know about the state of arrival / where they ended up & will have another look

  • Thanks for all that work, and well done. I had explored these avenues and found the same things that you have found, plus a death record for Margaret McCullough (King) on 31st March 1898, aged 30. I only heard the Australia angle last month and I'm only starting on that. I have no idea when or where (or even if) they went to Australia but I suspect that, if it did happen, it was in 1898 or 1899. There is no reference to Mary J McC or to Mary Anne King in the 1901 Census, but maybe Mary Anne had married and changed her name.
