Hi,

I'm Miriam McDonald and I'm helping my husband Ian trace some Irish Family.

What we know:

William Hixon McDonald was born in Enniscorthy around 1815. He died in Corindap .Victoria Australia in 1869.

On this death certificate his son recorded his grandfathers name is Hixon McDonald. (from extract of death registration 1869). The name of Hixon McDonald has not been supported by any other research by family members over the years.

William Hixon McDonald married Elizabeth Reid (c1818 - 1881) the marriage was possibly in Belfast.

Previous researchers have studied Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 and have been 15 McDonald households.

William's occupations were slater, soldier, miner and farmer. He resided in Dublin c 1834-1836 and was on British army postings in Ireland , England and Tasmania. He departed England on 31 Juy 1838 aboard the Augusta Jessie transporting 210 male convicts to Tasmania. He bought his commission and settled in Victoria. He was in the 2nd/51st Kings Own Light Infantry Regiment. His regimental number was 966. He was originally stationed at Carrickfergus near Belfast.

Well that's all we know - Ian is on GedMatch as I thought that might give us some clues, and my postings on Irish genealogy sites has led to a recommendation to post here which I am very grateful for.

We know very little about his wife Elizabeth Reid - and only an assumption that she came from Belfast.

A belated Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We are conducting a cleanup operation of older messages that did not receive a reply. We apologize that you did not receive a response earlier this year.

I presume that William McDonald was Church of Ireland. Records for Enniscorthy C of I parish appear to be held in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. See this link https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf

I searched for the marriage record on the subscription site Roots Ireland but did not find the church record. Civil registration of non-Roman Catholic marriages began in 1845 after William went to Tasmania.

You may want to add William's story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database
