Hello My aunt and I have been in search of information about Patrick D FItzgerald, born 3/17/1829 in LImerick. My aunt's DNA yielded Limerick and Clare origins. Patrick emigrated to the US, married a Mary Jane Riordon or Reardon and lived in Jaffrey, NH and then Sharon. He may have had a brother Thomas. We weren't able to find him in parish records that we searched. We did find a naturalization record for a Patrick D FItzgerald with the same birthdate in Newburyport , Ma, who listed Ardkilmartin as his home. We aren't sure that he is the correct Patrick. Mary Jane had a mother named Catherine Quinlan who also emigrated to the US and lived with them at one point, and her father was James. ANy information would be most helpful!! Thank you Kathy Kenney

Hi Kathy
I took a look through the available records based on the info that you provided above. Unfortuantly like you, I didnt find any new info. Irish records for the era that you are looking are patchy so the chances of finding new info are slim.

Hi Kathy
Ardkilmartin is a townland near Kilmallock, County Limerick. A nursing home called Marie Goretti is on the opposite side of the road so I think it should be easy enough to find on Google Maps.

I had a look at the index of births for Kilmallock registration district in 1929 but I can't find a Patrick Fitzgerald in 1929. The only one that looks a little close is Michael P, possibly Michael Patrick
First name(s) Michael P
Last name Fitzgerald
Registration year 1928
Registered quarter/year Apr - Jun 1928
Registration district Kilmallock
Volume 5

Mother's last name (original) O'DwyerAround that time many children were born in Croom Hospital but I can see nothing there for 1929 either. If you happen to know his mother's original surname it might help as it is often recorded on the index. If it is, it is much easier to identify the correct cert.

Tim Thanks so much for your efforts. Thanks, also, to the Croom Parish Council. I wish we had more info like the mother' s maiden name. Sadly, none of that was passed down. We are not even sure that he was the eldest ( hoping to go on the old Irish naming pattern that was common at that time). Maybe one of these days the 'luck of the Irish' will visit me and I will have success. With appreciation to all- Kathy

Thanks Kathy
Looking at Ardkilmartin in 1911, it looks like there were a lot of mature FitzGerald siblings living in the same house. If Ardkilmartin is correct, then one of the males (Daniel or Bartholmew) should be the father .http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Limerick/Kilmallock/Ardkilmartin/621752/
Looking at the same house in 1901 things seem pretty much the same.

Hi Kathy,
I have done a bit of research on families from Ardkilmartin. If your Patrick Fitzgerald was the Patrick originally from Ardkilmartin then here is some information on him. If he was born in 1829 then unfortunately there are no written records of his birth. Ardkilmartin is part of Kilmallock Parish (Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul) and unfortunately they did not begin recording baptisms until 1837. However, examining land records of the area it is likely that Patrick's fathert was Michael Fitzgerald. Naturalization records are probably going to give you the most information about his background (like his birth date). Patrick's family did remain in the area so it is possible to trace some of their lines, but with the lack of records it may be hard to link them exactly to your Patrick.
I hope that this is useful to you!

Thank you, this is helpful. Not 100% certain it is him, but all hints are valuable, and his eldest brother was a Michael, so that parent could make sense. I so appreciate your efforts! Kathy

Hi Kathy,
I had a quick look for Patrick and Mary Jane's marriage record and I found it but they didn't list their parents names in the record unfortunately. If his brother Michael married it might be worth looking for his marriage record to see if you can find out what his parents names are. This might help you to figure out if your Patrick was the Patrick from Ardkilmartin or if he came from elsewhere. I hope you are able to solve this mystery!
Hoping this helps,
Brenda

We have some information that Patrick may have had sisters Mary b 1823 and Catherine b 1815 (who married David Maloney- a baptism record suggests Rathkeale for the Maloneys) and brothers Thomas and Michael D. b 1813. His parents are likely James FItzgerald and Nancy Downs, townlands still unknown, in case this rangs any bells. Thank you!

I had a quick look at the The Tithe Applotment books which were compiled between about1828-1835 and looked up Ardkilmartin and there was one Fitzgerald landowner there c.1830 named Michael. He had 3 parcels of land amounting to about 16 acres(Irish) which would be about 25 english acres. There was a David Riordan there also farming 23 Irish acres. This info might be of help

I had a look at Griffiths property valuation of c 1850 and see that Michael Fitzgerald is still farming in Ardkilmartin with c,16 acres of land and his house can be pinpointed on an accompanying map..
