Patrick, a Roman Catholic, was born in County Galway in 1832-34 per two family sources and the 1861 England Census, but parish is unknown. His father's name was James per marriage certificate. Patrick married Bridget Rourke from County Mayo in Newcastle under Lyme, England on January 20, 1859. Her father's name was also James and per the marriage certificate he was deceased by then. Three children were born in England - Thomas, Mary & Patrick - before they emigrated to the USA in 1871 settling in Newark New Jersey. Three more children - John, Kate and Margaret - were born and raised there.

I have been having a really difficult time making the leap back from England to where they came from in Ireland for both Patrick and Bridget. In England Patrick was a laborer for the London Northwest RR and they lived in the company "railroad huts" per the 1861 England Census. I was hoping there would be some kind of paperwork filled out to live in the huts, but can't find anything. I am here in Ireland until September and have been trying so hard to find any information that would lead me to the parish they came from in Ireland. But I seem to be at a dead end. A parish name is crucial and that is just what I can't seem to find.

Any help or suggestions you can give me would be so appreciated!

  • Hi Bobbie,

A couple of possibles for Bridget:

In that era there were a lot of inaccuracies with birth years & baptisms could happen later so you never know.

No luck in the Irish Censuses or Tithe Applotments.

Here's a possible for James Rourke from Griffiths Valuation 1857:

Nothing for James Daley in Galway however.

  • Thank you  so much for this! I will check into all of it. I have a feeling that the baptism for Patrick Deely is not the same as my Patrick Daley because everything I find shows he was born, at the latest, in 1834 and was 6 or 7 years younger than Bridget. But I will check it out anyway.

    Again, thanks for this information!
