Hello,

First timer on this website, I've been trying to find some information on my great-great-grand-father from the time he was born to when he landed in Quebec, Canada. He would have been born around 22nd of september 1855, Carduff-Parish, Ballingtemple, County Cavan, Ulster, Northern Ireland (Which I don't even know if it makes sense). Can't seem to find anything on Ancestry regarding his parents or even his life before he had immigrated over sea. I don't have alot of information regarding his parents... Exept on Owen's McCann wedding records... His father would have been named John McCann and his mother Mary from Cavan parish. That's all I have...

Was wondering if anyone was looking into the same family line, or had information that would be really a treasure to have. My grand-father would like to have more information on his grand-father and I would like to actually give him some real and documented information on his ancestors before I am no longer able to...

I will upload the wedding record picture with this post... The wedding record is french... but you can clearly see that the name John McCann and Mary M... are listed as Owen's parents.

Thank you for your time, hoping someone can help me.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the RC records for Ballintemple parish start in 1862 so no baptismal record would be available for Owen and I did not see a marriage record. The spelling of the townland where they lived would be Corduff. I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there were seven McCann records and there was John McCann in Corr. I'm wondering if that was shorthand for Corduff https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cavan/ballintemple.htm

Do you know if Owen had any siblings? I ask because I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for Ballintemple records 1862 on and found a John McCann/Mary Lee couple who lived in Corduff and had the following children: Patt 1865 John 1868 Mary1871 Thomas 1873 Anne 1880 Below is a link to the birth record for John (5th record on page)

Let me know if you see a possible connection.

  • Hi Angela

Four and a half years later, I hope that you get a notification of this message. I live in Cavan, Ireland and I'm a descendant of a Luke Lee whose sister Mary married a John McCann who I think was from Corduff. This marriage was probably in the early 1860s just before the civil registration records begin and also, unfortunately, just before the Ballintemple church records. This is the family that Roger referred to.

There's a big chance that John was a brother of your Owen McCann. I had the impression that John McCann in my family tree had a father that was also called John but I've checked the records and I don't have any proof. Anyway, I have lots of records about John McCann, Mary Lee and their family and I'd be happy to share them.

    Best regards

    Ciarán.

  • Bonsoir Julie
