  • I don't have your specific names in my tree but I have both Gleesons and Burke/Bourkes who emigrated to upper Canada. You might want to look at Borrisokane and Nenagh in Tipperary.

  • Hello to Katherine Canny, travellingmamma and Cordangan.

Apologies. Have been off this list for a few years, still re-learning how to navigate the site and I don't seem to be able to find how to reply to you individually.  Nothing I "click" on will allow me to dod so.

Have just started to look seriously at my GLEESONS again now I am retired and have more time.

    SO:

Katheryn canny - yes I am in Australia.  Tasmanian born, Living in Queensland for 17 years.

travellingmamma - Thank you for the tip.  I will look again in the areas you mention.  May not have done so since the digitised baptisms and marriages came online.  There has never been a mention of them in Borrisokane or Nenagh, but of course that may have been where they originally came from.

Cordangan - Yes, this is the Lancelot/Launcelot that lived in Milltown, Cullen.  I do know from another correspondent from a few years ago, that there was another GLEESON family with almost all the same Christian names also living in the Ballinulty area.

I can find no definitive birth, death or marriage for my Lancelot/Launcelot/Malachi and his Bridget Burke/Bourke.

The birth that proves both Christian names is the one I listed for their son MALACHY/MALACHI. He was baptised with parents named as MALACHIAS & BRIDGET, but on his wedding certificate they are named as LANCELOTT & BRIDGET.

The "other" GLEESON family tree I was given has a MARK GLEESON died 1826, married ELLEN BARRON ca1791-1864.  My Correspondent is descended from their daughter WINIFRED, who married JOHN HENNESSY.

Their last two sons were a MARK 1824-1904 who married MARGARET HOGAN and a DANIEL 1826-1905 whom I had thought may have been be ours who married BRIDGET MORRISSY 1842-?  He has no LANCELOT/LAUNCELOT or MALACHY/MALACHI in his line that he knows of.

Just the other day I found in the land valuations on Family Search, a MARCUS & DANIEL in 1826.  Sorry, i didn't make notice of the lots.  Was in a hurry.

Also mentions in 1851 of LANCELOT on Lot 12, and a MAURICE on lot 13.

In 1845 and 1851, MARCUS on lot 16 and THOMAS on lot 17.

The 1851 men would seem to HAVE to be related in some way, but I had not seen the names MAURICE or THOMAS before in connection with my family.

Thank you all for taking an interest,

Wynnette Ford, formerly Blanchard, nee Mansfield.

  • Hi Wynnett,

I don't have any of your names in my tree but I can tell you that Jacobus is James in Latin.

I see that one of your ancestors went to Canada.  Depending on where in Canada, there is a good site for Bytown (Ottawa) called BytownnorBust you can check.

    Hope this helps.
