Mary McGrath was born in Mayne, County Westmeath about 1810. McGrath has different spellings but this is what is recorded at the cemetery where she is buried. This is all we know about her Irish roots. Any info would be wonderful.

Susan:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The RC parish for Mayne civil parish would be Coole and Coole parish has records back to the late 1700s. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any 1810 Mary McGrath records anywhere in Co. Westmeath but Coole parish did have a Mary McGrath baptismal record in 1808. See transcription below. This Mary also had the following siblings: Maurice 1804 Michael 1806 James 1810 Patrick 1814 John 1816. I did not find a marriage record.

By chance did you find out anything about Margaret, when she died? You have all been great helping fill in our family tree. What a wonderful thing you are doing.

I did not find a death record for Margaret pre-1864 when civil registration began.

Thanks for checking. I have not found anything either, Any ideas why not?

Civil registration started in 1864. Pre-1864, death info was maintained by a few churches but many did not. Many people died 1845-1852 during the famine and the volume of deaths was too great to maintain records.

This is a question about Mary McGrath's husband, James Dunn or Dunne. We know nothing about him before he came to America. Using our census data, he was born about 1805. We think he came to America to work in the canals, saving enough money to buy land in Illinois in 1843. We do not know if James and Mary married in Ireland or in America. We have not found marriage records here. On the chance that he was from Westmeath, I have looked at marriage records in Mayne. There were several Dunne all spelling the name with an e. Hope you can find something for us.
