Seeking Carroll Family

I checked two subscription sites: Roots Ireland and FindMyPast and did not find a James Carroll baptismal record with the parents names you provided.

My surname is Carroll. The family have lived in Blackwater parish (Killila) in Co Wexford for generations. The names James and Patrick would be in the family and Doran is also a local surname but I have nothing to prove my inkling that its the same family. I will do more research and let you know.

That is so kind of you. Perhaps we're distant cousins. The mother, Mary Louise Dorn, was from Great Britain, but the only origins I could find for that name are in Germany, which is why I suspect that it might be Doran.

Hi Ballyconnigar.   Although I know of no relationship to your family, I was interested to note the mention of the villages of Blackwater and Killila as I think this may be the first time I have seen these name in my two years of following the Wexford Threads.  My family foolklore is that my great grandfather James Swann, born around 1820, to parents X Swann /Swann and his wife , possibly called Margaret  lived in that area and may have been buried there.   James left home in his teens and eventually settled in Raglan, New Zealand.  His siblings included a sister Anne, who married a X Cash / Cashe,  and brothers, William, Edward, Charles, and a John who evidently went to live in Troy, New York.  My research has located other possible names as Ballina, and Ballyvalloo near Blackwater.   I am posting this information perchance any other reader researching  Wexford and Blackwater  families may recognise this  Swan / Swann  family name   Any assistance with information would be much appreciated.. Have you uncovered any information on the Carroll family that might include my ancestors James, born about 1794 and his father Patrick? There might be a Francis in there too. Thanks

I also have a James Carroll with father Patrick Carroll married to Alice Guiry ( Geary?). James was born about 1822 in Pilltown, Waterford County at the foot of the Blackwater River.  patrick had 5 children that I am aware of, one being Michael born abt 1811  married Helena Fraher abt 1844 in Clashmore/ Pilltown. Michael and Helena were my great great grandparents.

The other 3 known children were patrick, Catherine and Declan for whom I have no information?

Thanks for responding. It sounds like your Patrick could be the brother of my James and their father could be Patrick. James moved to Philadelphia and married Mary Louisa Dana in 1819. I don't know what became of his parents. Do you have a GEDMatch kit that we can compare to see if we are related? My number is AY6345474 and I am also on Ancestry.

I checked all my carroll related kits at gedmatch and there is no good match anywhere. I also checked a few other Carroll related accounts that I work with and nothing there either.

Any marriage in 1819 would be to early for my carroll clan.

Hi Stephen,
I live in Co Wexford and I know the area around Blackwater. The Cash name is still strong in this area of Wexford.
The Swan name is still around also, I know of two families of Swan in Wexford.
The first record of Swan in Wexford that I know of, was a Capt Swan. He was a Cromwellian soldier who was given a large grant of land by Cromwell for his service to the Crown circa 1649/50. One of my ancestors purchased the land from him and I reside on one portion of it.

 Hi Billy     Many thanks for your posting.   Yes, I have traced a family relationship to Patrick Cashe  and his late father John Cashe of Garryvaddon, nr Blackwater.   However I have never located any other Swan / Swann relatives in Co Wexford.    I have been told that a Capt John Swan was part of Cromwell's supporters, and received land,   but I have never seen any written evidence of this.  One family story is that my  great grandfather James Swann's father was called John, and that he was either a Harbourmaster or Customs Official of Blackwater, but presumably not at Blackwater.    If correct I would quesss that he worked at Wexford Town, but  commuted to where his family lived at Ballyna / Ballyvalloo on his small farm  there.  I have been told that people holding such jobs were invariably Church of Ireland, and not Roman Catholic.   Perhaps that explains why I have not found him.  I have posted some information on a separate  IrelandXO thread  under Swan / Swann, Co Wexford, as suggested by Jane.    Again, thanks for providing information.   If you wish, please email me:  stephenschollum@gmail.com     Regards,  Stephen, Cambridge, NZ  [ Half way around the world, and I suspect I may not be visiting Ireland for some time]

At last I am getting back to you. I can find very little information. The following inscriptions are taken from headstones in a local, but, very old graveyard in Ballyvaldon.
(1) Erected by James Carroll in memory of his father, Dennis Carroll died Feb 3rd 1856 aged 56 yrs.
(2) Erected by Owen Carroll, Ballyconnigar for his mother Anne Carroll died Dec 3rd 1846 aged 75. Also his father Patrick Carroll died Dec 15th 1847 aged 90 yrs. Also his sister Mary.
I think Dennis, Owen and Mary were siblings but not sure. When I read about your James I thought, they could have a brother James but my names dont fit yours. So sorry for giving you false hope.

The fact those 2 graves are beside each other would indicate they belong to the same family. Dennis is still a family name and the Owen mentioned was my husbands gr grandfather. He (Owen) also had a son James b. 24/10/1840. I have a marriage cert for this James Carroll (described as a sailor) & Catherine Cordon for 24/12/1865. They arrived in New York 20/03/1866 on board the 'City of Washington'. We suspect they eloped but know nothing about their life in America.

I am searching for my g-grandfathers homeplace in Ireland. His name was Patrick Carroll and he was born about 1828. He came to the US about 1850 and raised a family in Illinois. Through DNA testing I have a connection with Wexford County. His name is John Carroll born 1815 and passed 1886 Rosbercon, New Ross, Wexford, Ireland. Any help or information is greatly appreciated.
