My great grandfather was Michael Joseph Hogan born in Boyle on 22 March 1838, I believe to Patrick Hogan and Brigid Walsh but to date I have not been able to obtain any information about them. I believe that Patrick and Brigid were also the parents of James born 6 April 1841 and John born 21 July 1845. Any information or research suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located an 1836 baptismal record for a daughter Catherine on the subscription site Roots Ireland and also an 1842 baptismal record for a son John  who likely died young. I looked on the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Boyle civil parish and there was a Patrick Hogan in Aghagowla townland.  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/boyle.htm  Likely this would have been your ancestor. There was akso a Thomas Hogan possibly a brother. The 1901 census showed a James Hogan family. James was a son of Thomas.

  • Roger: thanks for your investigation! You confirmed my previous find, Catherine in 1836. In addition to my Great Grandfather Michael, I also found another son James born in 1841 (made a DNA connection to his desecndant), and John (I had the wrong birth year, it is 1842 as you point out). A few questions/comments as I try some logic out: 1) I see how you found Thomas and brother is a good assumption. 2) I can't find a birth year for Patrick, but I did find a Brigid Walsh born in Boyle in 1819 which would make her 16 at the birth of Catherine (is that plausible?) 3) I searched Roots Ireland looking for the birth of a Patrick Hogan between 1810-1818 assuming Patrick would be 18-26 at the birth of Catherine with a father named Michael(assumed that if Patrick & Brigid named their first son Michael that would be Patrick's father's name) and came up with 2 in Limerick in 1815, 3 in Tipperary- 1810 & 1817 and 2 in Waterford 1812. I found one Patrick Hogan born in 1818 in Athleague Roscommon : am I completely insane with this thinking? 4) how did you assume John died young: becasue he wasn't in Griffith's with Patrick and Thomas?   Dennis Hogan Pelham, New Hampshire

    Reactions to your questions.

It is possible that the 1819 Bridget is the mother of Catherine.

I don't believe any of the Patrick Hogan baptismal records that you located are for your ancestor.

There were two John Hogan baptismal records in Boyle with Patrick and Bridget as parents. One in 1842 and the other in 1845. It was a common practice when a child died young to give the next child of the same sex the name of the deceased child.

All the best with your research.
