I'm trying to trace descendants of William McKee 1818-1903c. He lived for many yrs in nearby Shinrone. He would have been ex-RIC. His son, Robert A McKee 1850-1897 was also in the RIC.
Three of his descendants (1911 Census) were living in the Roscrea area and I'm hoping that someone may have information on them.
1911
John McKee, 18, was living at 11 Castle St, Roscrea. John was an assistant. Head of the house, Nathaniel Lutterell.
Robert McKee, 14, was living at 5 Valley St, Roscrea. Robert was a shop assistant. Head of house, William Hunt. Grocer and merchant.
William McKee, 21, was living at 54 Force St, Mountmellick with relations - not sure of connection - William Piggott 65, labourer and his wife Sarah Piggott 50. William was a sextant. (C-O-I)
Ellen McKee, 20, I have not been able to find.
Any information would be much appreciated.
John

Hi John . . .
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . to Tipperary . . . and to the Town of Roscrea.
Margot (above) has already given you some info. on Emigration . . . . with various names and dates . . . . .
__________________________________________________________-
So . . . as I am Roscrea born . . . maybe I can assist you a little further . . . lets see . .
CENSUS . . . 1901 Census for Kings County ( a.k.a Offaly now ) wherein lies the Village of Shinrone (see below)
Elizabeth . . Daughter in Law ( 38 ) . . . is listed . . with her 4 children
Ellen (10) John (8) Frances (6) Robert (4)
So Elizabeth . . . is minding the Elder Father in Law . . William aged 84 . .
BUT . . who was Elizabeth married to . . . was that Robert ??. . . who is in the R.I.C. ( hence was not listed on the Census on the night - in Barracks . . they were listed only under initials . .
William was BORN in Leitrim County . . . BUT . . when I search for his Birth . . 1818 Leitrim +/- 5 yrs. . . I find nothing . . .on Ancestry & Roots (paid)
AND . . because . . in the R.I.C. . . he is being posted around Ireland . . SO . . its hard to determine WHO & Where . . he Married . . .
_________________________________________________________________-
CENSUS . . . 1911 . . . Shinrone . . . Elizabeth . . .is now with NO children . . . but only a Boarder . . a P.J.Murphy ( Insurance Ins.from Co.Cork ) (see below)
_____________________________________________________________________________
SO . . here's a question . . . you have rightly found a Wm.McKee . . .in 1911 Census . . . living with relations. . . aged 21 . . BUT born in Queens Co.
Have you any proof that this William . . is . . in any way related ?? I dont think so . . . because . . . Elizabeth appears (1901) to have her 4 children born in Kings Co. (Shinrone) ..full stop.
(see below)

My being from Roscrea Town . . . I remember Luttrells Grocery Store and Buthers . . . also Hunts . . .
Luttrells would have ceased trading . . . I'm guessing . . . around the 1970'ies
________________________________________________________________________________
So what of ELLEN (20) . . . FRANCIS (16). . . and ROBERT .(14) . . . in 1911 ??
As per your info. . . we find Robert . . . in 1911 . . . with the Hunt family . . Trainee . . . in Roscrea.
FRANCES (16) . . in 1911 . . I find her in PORTUMNA .Co.Galway . . with the Family of the Vicar . . (C of.I.) E.E. Rush . . and Family.
Portumna Town . . . is near enough . . to shinrone . . .
______________________________________________________________________________
ELLEN . . . in 1911 . . . I FAILED to find Ellen anywhere in Ireland . .
BUT here is her Birth recording (see Below). . . . Gleaulbet Co. Tipperary . . . should read " Glenalbert" . . a St.Patrick's Day baby !!!

I did NOT search . . any . . info. on Emigration . . . . .
I hope you find a nugget or two . . . in the above . . .
Good luck with your continued searching
Best I could do . . . Cheers . . Eamonn

Margot & Eamonn,
Many thanks for your replies. It'll be interesting to try and track down my American relatives.Hopefully, this will sort things out.
RIC files tend to be very reliable. From the RIC file: No 3271 William Mckee, was born in Leitrim 1818c. Married 22/11/1847, wife from Kings. Have never been able to get the cert, but I'm sure she's Ellen Sommers. why, because she's down as Ellen and her grandchild's second name is, Robert Sommers McKee. Although William and sons are all C-O-I, it's possible that Ellen was RC.Two (3?) of William's sons joined the RIC: Robert A McKee, b1850c, No 34548; Henry McKee, (my great, great grandfather) 1855c No 39381 and William James, b 1862c No 46808. The reason I'm sure of the two is that Robert's family were living there 1901 Census and Henry's first child Maude, b 1882, was born there.
Frustrating for me, there are likely to be more offspring, but with no GRO records, I'm at a loss as to how to track them down. I tried some church records, but came up with a blank.Elizabeth and her family were living in Shinrone 1901, because her husband, Robert (above) dies in 1897 - the same yr his mother Ellen McKee died. He was working as a caretaker (retired from the RIC) at the She Hills ? Roscrea, when he died.
I didn't include Frances aged 16, 1911 Census, Portumna, Galway, because she wasn't in Roscrea. Head of the house was the Rev, Edward, Evans, Rush. Evans is the maiden name of her mother, Elizabeth McKee.
I do have proof that William McKee, Jnr, is the son of Robet and Elizabeth McKee. In the 1901 Census he is living with his grandfather and aunt at 8 Shanbeg, Rosenallis, Queens. His grandfather is William Evans, a boot maker. This is the same information that Elizabeth gave on her marriage Cert, 9th Nov 1882.
I was hoping that I might have some relatives still living in the Roscrea area, but as Margot has shown, my only chance will be if William McKee, who was living in the Moutmellick area and was a sextant 1911 remained.
Elizabeth McKee nee Evans, dies in Mountmellick in 1930.

Hi John,
I'm the person that Margot contacted. Frances was my great-grandmother and immigrated to the US in 1911. One of her children is still living and very sharp at 91 years old.
I would love to connect and share what we can about the McKee family.
Thank you!
Suzanne

To Margot,
Once again many thanks, especially for putting me in contact with Suzanne.Suzanne, would love to hear from you. I only just discovered your side of the family.
It'd be easier if you could send me an e-mail. Mine is juanmckee@yahoo.co.uk or you could send a post here. Look forward to hearing from you either way.
Frances, would have been my grandfather's 1st cousin.
