I am looking for information if anybody can help. I am trying to find the birthplace and burial place of Hugh Lennon, my great great grandfather. He was born in 183? and died in 1908. He was living in Coolboy in 1901 and when he died. He was married to Catherine Murphy born in Loggan in 1832. In the 1901 census he has Co Wexford as his place of birth. While Loggan, to the best of my knowledge is in Co Wexford (barely) Catherine's place of birth is given in the 1901 census as Co Wicklow. I know that several of their children are buried in Coolafancy, and another - my great grandmother is buried in Macreddin, there is also a son buried in Montana, USA, but I cant find any reference as to where they themselves are actually buried. Anything that can add to my knowledge of them would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, John Byrne.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found an 1824 baptismal record for a Hugh Lennon in Kilanerin RC parish on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I know 1824 is earlier than your estimate of when he was born but it the parish is close to your area of interest.

  • Thank you for replying Roger..I have reviewed my gggrandfather Hugh Lennon's death cert. He died in 1908 and his age is given as 71 which agrees with that given in the 1901 census - 65. That would mean that he was born in 1836/7.  However, I had looked at that Killanerin one earlier and discounted it because of this but there are a few coincidences in it. In the Killanerin one, Hugh's father is given as Martin Lennon and his mother as Mary Kelly. Their oldest child, my greatgrandmother, was given the name Mary ?? and his eldest son was given the name Martin ??. Coolafancy Cemetary has a few Martin Lennons in it, descended from Hugh, but then again, his wife, Catherine Murphy's family seems to have the name Martin as a recurring name to this day. I would imagine it will take another descendant of Hugh and Catherine to clarify this one for me.

  • This is just a shot in the dark by me to try to break down a brick wall in my family history.

My 2x Great Grandmother was Mary LENNON and I'm afraid I have never found out much about her.  Judging by her earliest child's date, she was probably born c1830s.

Michael Neill and Mary Lennon were probably married c1855, as their first known child was born in 1857.  After their marriage and until 1857, they lived at Raheengraney, Co Wicklow and then by 1858 had moved to nearby Leany, Co Carlow, where they lived for a number of years.  They has four children:  Catherine O'Neill (1857-1887), John O'Neill (1858-c1901), Michael O'Neill (born 1863) and Charles O'Neill (born 1867).

I'd be delighted to hear of any connection to your Lennon family, or any suggestions you may have so that I can research further back.

    Best regards Richard

  • Hi Richard.

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier.

I am afraid that these Lennons are proving rather difficult to track down.Tracing people is made more difficult buy the fact that you cannot always believe birth dates or at the ages that are entered in the 1901 or 1911 censuses.

There is a good chance that your Mary, born circa 1830, could be a sister of my ancestor Hugh Lennon. His oldest child was my greatgrandmother called Maryanne or Mary. In those days the oldest child would be named after their father's parents. Hugh was born around 1836 if you believe the 1901 census. The only baptisms I can find for a Hugh Lennon were either early thirties or another in the mid twenties. The earlier one had parents Hugh and Mary. The later one had parents Martin and Mary. This one is more probable as Hugh called his eldest son Martin. However, Hugh's wife was Catherine Murphy, daughter of Martin Murphy. Martin is a name that runs through the Murphys to this day, as indeed it does through the Lennons. So, in a nutshell, we have hit a roadblock. Please fel free to contact me again if I can be of assistance.

    Kind regards.

    John.
