Seeking information about great grandparents and 2-3rd gg. Daniel McGuinness, his son James McGuinness born in 1837 near Belfast is my guess in Down or Antrim County. James married Rose Ann Roddy and went to Liverpool. His son my great grandfather born in Liverpool John James McGuinness in 1862. Tradition of Catholicism and military service in family.

It appears that James & Rose Ann married in Liverpool. There’s a likely marriage registered in Liverpool in Jul – Set quarter 1861 Volume 8b page 438. The marriage certificate should give you Daniel McGuinnesses’s occupation which may help trace the family in Ireland.
Have you checked all the English censuses 1861 onwards to see if there’s a detailed place of birth for James? Usually it just says Ireland but sometimes you get lucky and there’s somewhere more specific. Especially in the 1911 census if he was still in England then.
Birth registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864 so for someone born in 1837 you are reliant on church baptism records. Many of the RC baptism records for Ireland are on Ancestry. I have checked the site but do not see one that fits James. Not every parish has records for 1837, so there may be no record of him. But as I say Daniel’s occupation might help. We might be able to find him in land records or trade directories, if we know what trade we are looking for.
