Hi,
I have been tracking down relations of mine, McKees, in the Roscrea area and I'm trying to follow up on a story a relation has just told me in regards to Robert McKee.

She said that they were told that Robert McKee, was killed in a riot, 1897c.
Robert McKee would have been an ex-RIC officer at the time. He resigned from the RIC in 1889 and was living in "She Hills," Roscrea; his occuptation being a caetaker.

I have come across a death cert, for the April-June period 1897. Although he is down as M'Kee, it seems likely to be him. He would have been 47 yrs old at the time.

I'm just wondering if anyone would have heard if a riot took place? I'm presuming it would have been in the Roscrea area.
If it had resulted in a death, I was hoping there would be some record of it.

Regards,
John.

  • John,

The death you have identified in 1897 is certainly for someone who had been a police officer. He is described as a “police pensioner” on the certificate. Cause of death was a cerebral tumour though. So if it’s the man you are looking for he appears to have died from natural causes rather than in a riot.

M’Kee and McKee are the same.  Originally M’ was the common way of prefixing names like McKee or McDonnnell.  Over the years Mc & Mac became more common but you will find M’ used in the 1800s and for much of the 1900s.

  • Many thanks to you both. I find with family stories, you just never know if they are true or not.
