I am seeking information on Costello family living in Limerick c1829-33. Kate Costello gave State Evidence in the murder trial of Holycross in 1829. Subsequently her father Edmund, Kate and her brother Edward jnr, and sisters Judith/ Julia and Mary claimed financial assistance from the government( according to records in the National Archives).
e..g." Memorial from Catherine Costelloe, Limerick Police Office, [County Limerick], to Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess Anglesey, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], asking for protection and the means to move elsewhere, and to continue allowance payments to her sisters Julia and Mary Costelloe [also named as Julien O'Brien and Mary Molony]; pointing to her role as crown witness against the Keoughs and John Walsh for the murder of Daniel Mara, and her having had to leave Holycross, County Tipperary. Also, letters from [Thomas Philips] Vokes, chief magistrate, Limerick, [County Limerick], and the relevant Crown Solicitor, making arrangements for payments."
Any help in finding these people in Limerick 1828-onwards would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Margaret,
How did you get on?
I have traced my great great grandfather to Michael Costello, a river pilot in Clarecastle (as was his son)
Through DNA, I have Costello cousins from Limerick, and am looking for the "missing link", in hope rather than expectation. I found a record for a Michael Costello born in Fedamore Limerick, b 1808, which fits with my GGGF's age.
Anyway, more than happy to share the details of my research. Yours story sounds very interesting - who knows, perhaps there is a connection?
Best regards
David Costelloe

Good to hear from you David, but not sure I can be of much help. I have not done any DNA tracing but you may recognise something, so happy to share the little which I do have. My connection to
the Costello family is via Mary Keogh, who married Lawrence Cummins in Tipperary, prior to migration to NSW Australia in 1841. Mary's parents were Thomas Keogh and Catherine Costello, both deceased before 1841.
As I posted originally, a Costello family made claims for protection following the witness statement of Kate Costello in the 1829 Holycross murder trial. An address given in 1 claim was Rathbane, Limerick which I think is very close to Limerick city. A book written about the Keogh family and their involvement in the murder is available from my State Library here in NSW but I have been unable to access it yet, due to COVID 19 restrictions.
I have not found any relevant information on a Michael Costello c1810 in Limerick.
Regards
Margaret
