Hello! I am looking for information.

Her name is "Margaret Jane Paterson/Patterson" born 11 MAY 1838 in Tyrone, County Galway, Ireland. Father was William Paterson and Mother is (I think) Margaret Johnston/Johnstone.

Protestant

I'm trying to find a baptism or Census or ANY document in Ireland about her and her family. She eventually moved to Scotland by 1855 and later to Australia by 1886

Hello! I am looking for information about:

  • Hi Christy.

A William Paterson is recorded in the 1850's as a Sub Constable of Police in Eyrecourt, Co. Galway. In one entry the address is shown as "Shannon View".

There is a Sub. Constable John Johnstone showing for Ardrahan which would cover Kilcolgan "Tyrone House", a Robert Johnstone (same Rank) in Monivea and a William Johnstone in Athenry, same rank.

You can get details of Sub. Constable Paterson's police record from the Nathonal Archives, Kew, Sussex, England which will show the stations he was attached to, his native county and the native county of his wife. If he received a pension it will show where is was being paid.

It is likely that his wife is connected to the other named Johnstone's.

  • Probably worth adding that RIC policy was not to post police officers to the county that they were born in, or if married, to the county their wife was born in.  Consequently you can be fairly certain that if sub Constables Paterson & Johnstone were serving in Galway, neither was a native of that county.

  • Hi Christy,

Roots Ireland - www.rootsireland.ie - has a record of the baptism of Joseph Patterson in Ballinakill  (Ballynakill), Connemara (Barony of Ballynahinch) on May 3rd 1835.

His father is recorded as William Patterson, S.C. of Police and his mother as Mary Patterson. Religion: Church of Ireland. The baptism was performed by M.A. Foster.

    No record found for siblings.

In relation to native County: this Regulation came in c1837.

  • This is absolutely amazing! I know that WIlliam Patterson died before 1855 because his daughter was married in 1855 and he was labeled at deceased and she married in Scotland. So if the records are correct, maybe he died between 1850-1855. I am going to look into this! I might need help if anyone is still willing? I am VERY new at Irish.  Can anyone find me scanned couments of some of this?

    Hi Christy,

Due to the Corona virus libraries are shut and there is no access until later in the year.

In relation to Sub. Constable William Paterson in Eyrecourt, he was serving in 1859, so you can rule him out! - Source - Petty Sessions Courts @ www.findmypast.ie

In order to narrow down the possible father of Joseph Patterson in West Galway, it will be necessary to get the police number of the" William Patterson's" who joined between 1822 and 1835. The original detail can be got by post from the National Archives in Dublin, if considered a possible match - cost c20 Euro.

You might give details of the document you have in relation to "Tyrone, Galway" and any other information that you consider relevant to the Irish records.

    Hi Christy,

A check of the RIC index by Jim Herlihy shows the following staff numbers for "William Patterson" - 15247, 19595, 21290, 27496, 34309, 42930

There are 14 William Patterson's in all. The above numbers reflect the time frame in which your relative may have been in Galway, having regard

to the baptism of Joseph Patterson in Ballynakill, Clifden in 1835. I have requested a copy of the original, but have not received it to-date.

I suggest that you get a genealogist in the Nationa Archives in Kew, Sussex, England to check the service and pension records of the "William Patterson"

who was in Clifden in 1835.

Attached transcript of baptism of Joseph Petterson.
